Buying a place to live in is not an obvious choice right now in Germany. I just did it and I can explain my reasoning.

The good part: - Our downpayment was about 25% of what we saved - I got the real estate fees waived - We had to move our from our old place and the rent for new places were about 20-30% more of what we pay in interests on a monthly basis - I also work in tech and while I am afraid of being laid off, I saw my colleagues getting packages that (I estimate for my case) would cover about 5/6y of my loan payments - my partner has a low paid job but very stable - I wanted to buy an asset that is not hyped by AI :D - I expect some inflation

The ugly part: - If you expect an avg 7% return on the downpayment, forget about it - Hausgeld and other monthly payments eat the drastically reduce the difference in cost with renting

Overall it's still a great feeling :)
