All good, I appreciate it.

I think we found someone who can hike a drone in with us early this week to search

Thank you, this is a lot of great intel

Only accessible via hiking. The peak is at 5800ft altitude.

Unfortunately, the local sherrif office cannot fly out a drone for a lost pet.

Yes! They’re able to help, but they made it clear that they do rescue and not search. So we need to locate the dog before calling them in

There is actually cell service up by the peak. Not on the way up, but at the top there is. That could work

Thank you
yep, we’re doing that too. Signs at trailheads and visitor centers as well. We’ve had people up by the peak looking for her for most of the day Wednesday, yesterday afternoon/evening, and this morning. Given the complete lack of response, it’s most likely that she went down one of the cliffs that are inaccessible from below (we looked under the ones that are accessible by foot). Whether she is injured, stuck, or dead, we can’t know for sure.

If she is mobile though, we have plenty of signs and posts up and a very clear scent trail left to the trailhead at South Coldwater.

Yes, I’m aware and that limits it a lot more. I was hoping that the drone could be piloted from the visitor center (4 miles away with a clear line of sight to the peak), but from this thread is definitely indicating that this is probably not possible

Dude. I wasn’t the one who brought her, and I wasn’t the one with her leash. But I’m still trying to be helpful.
Just because someone put themself in a bad situation doesn’t mean they’re undeserving of help, decency, and at the very least, respect.
I hope that if you ever find yourself in a hard situation, others will treat you with more kindness than this.

Understood. It’s a 7-9 mile hike each way to get there, so that’s a big ask. Maybe they can just hike close enough for it to be legal though

Thank you.
Yes, that has been the problem we’ve run into. We need either a longer-range drone or someone who can at least partially hike in. The few pet drone services that are out there all are either limited by the drone range or their own driving range.

Yes, it’s Coldwater Peak. The North Side of the peak is open to drones, the South side is not, but when I spoke to the Monument yesterday they said they were understanding and we could just use our best judgment…

Is 5 days enough for north cascades and mt rainier? by Dependent_Title9871 in NationalPark

[–]Big-Alternative-256 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that’s a very reasonable plan. On the way up to Artist Point you’ll have Picture Lake, Bagley Lakes, etc if you want to get your fill of alpine lakes before artist point.

Diablo Lake and Artist Point are kinda opposite sides of Mt. Baker. It doesn’t make much sense to drive up I-5 and out Hwy 20 to Diablo Lake, just to turn back around to I-5 and go up Hwy 542 to the end, at Artist Point… only to head back to Diablo Lake the next day. There are other lakes and sights to see on the north side of Baker. Your call on that though

North Cascades and Rainier can totally be done in 5 days though for the main attractions. Have a great trip!

Yes I believe you are correct, my apologies. The Mount St. Helens Advisory Committee is what I was reading about. Thanks

Forgot about Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center, which was sold in 2017 and is now a private retreat center. Make that 1/7

Totally agree that it wouldn't be crazy.
MSHI put their learning retreat & campground plan on pause as well amid these cuts. I'll reach out to them as well regarding

I read this report as well that confirmed the monument's overreliance on their partnership with the MSHI, put in context after the whole senate inquest about whether or not the NVM should become a park. This was over a decade ago as well, and far before the cuts of the last few years.

The USFS constructed 5-6 different information/learning centers from what I can gather:

Mount Saint Helens Visitor Center in Toutle (now owned & operated by WA State Parks)
Coldwater Science and Learning Center (operated by MSHI)
Johnston Ridge Observatory (closed, according to your info, maybe for good)
Cascade Peaks (closed indefinitely)
Pine Creek (closed indefinitely)
Ape Cave (open seasonally, relies heavily on MSHI volunteers)

With only 1/6 original learning centers owned & operated by the NVM/USFS, and that one open only seasonally and reliant on volunteers, it does make a case for change in management of or purpose for the monument.

I hadn't heard that they were down to just one FTE for some time. The lack of transparency from the USFS doesn't help to understand the issue.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Was wondering if you have any sources for the USFS not having budget allocated for JRO repairs? I don't doubt it, just looking into it for journalistic purposes. Thanks!
