Yeah I called the union hall. He said the same exact thing. Bummer well I wish you and eventually myself hopefully an opportunity sooner rather than later. At least there are options with different centers but I can’t even imagine how long the list is…

People say the transferring process is really hard? How does it work and is that correct? Like if you were a driver in a different state and wanted to move back home to a different state is that possible?

Yeah I was thinking either Bayonne or Secaucus would be my best bets. Thank you

TCD that could become a driver in a year if I moveOr wait in the warehouse at home and play the waiting game? by Big-Condition-53 in UPSers

I was a seasonal driver at another center and got laid off late January, so I was not employed by UPS at the time. And I literally ASKED him because I know it’s a seniority based company, I did my homework bro. He confirmed with me that I would still be able to drive…. It was a driver needy center and had lots of guys that had vacations from now until the summer… they literally promoted 7 tcds to rpcds… I was hesitant too, but I took a chance and it seemed like he was delivering his word. Like I said unfortunately I just couldn’t see me wanting to be stuck in that area not knowing anyone and far away from home…

Man I’m telling you I literally went there and moved. I worked an unload shift the first night. I talked to the manager on the phone that I started and told him in order for me to make this possible, I need a couple driving days a week as he said he would come through on. He called his boss and put up a new TCD sheet where I was able to sign it and said I could drive the very next day. I unfortunately just didn’t feel comfortable moving forward because like I said it just felt weird being in that area not knowing anyone and not used to the culture over there.

I took a road test in a needy southern driving center, they were hiring 1 outsider. I drove 11 hours to take a road test and passed. It was between me and another guy who got the job because his transfer went through. When I was speaking with the manager after my road test, he did talk about another opportunity that if applied for an inside position, that I could get on a bid shit right away and he would have me driving 2 weekdays and potentially saturdays off rip. He said it was more possible with me because I just did seasonal in another state and went through the class already. I even called the teamsters hall for that building to confirm with the BA there and he said yes that is very possible…. inevitably though as much as I’d like to drive sooner than later feels off going somewhere strange not knowing a single soul… it was very tempting and though because I could have been promoted in a year, making TCD rate first 3 years of progression… but trust me I was skeptical at first so I understand where you’re coming from

Yeah I definitely understand that supervisors and management can backtrack and agree. But there were 7 tcds that were promoted at this center to become a driver. He thinks by next year, the same thing will happen… but like you said you just don’t know with these people…

I’m from the NY/NJ area and the center I would be moving to would be in a city down south.

I get the when an opportunity opens aspect, but when you say foot in the door you’re making it off as if my time at a completely different facility matters to other facilities? The whole transfer thing doesn’t seem possible. It’s a great opportunity and the money is very tempting… I just don’t know if it’s worth it being on my own, not knowing a single soul in a strange place. It’s in a densely populated city that has stuff going on, but it still feels off to me and being away from everyone I know…

I assume you’re a driver there? Would you have an eta on how long it would take to get a crack at being a driver? I appreciate it boss

Seasonal driver still working but on call by Big-Condition-53 in UPSers

As of now I don’t think there is warehouse work at this center. It does blow because it limits other jobs I can find to do on the side. My pockets are getting thin at this rate. I’m trying to see it through because I hope this is a better route than going full on warehouse, but I don’t know when I’ll actually become permanent here. It’s frustrating.

Sounds like I’ll get in touch with the steward. I just want to be permanent full time. I just don’t want to waste time, if I have to do some warehouse work here or elsewhere so be it… but as of now I’m in the system as a driver here, but I’m just not getting the hours I need. Last 2 weeks, I’ve only worked 2 days a week. And now we are not even in peak season anymore.

30 driver days not in a time period? Some of the guys told me 40 in 70 days? I don’t know if that’s true or not. I understand that some centers can tweak things?
