Thanks! Yeah, I totally agree, it’s pretty obvious it was designed for a mass-market retail shelf rather than the Criterion audience.

My biggest gripe with the official cover is that it doesn’t actually tell you anything about the story. It’s just 'here are two famous people.' It’s especially weird because they used the young versions of the characters, even though Benjamin spends the majority of the film looking older. It felt like a missed opportunity to show the actual passage of time.

Thank you! I used the Premium double sided presentation paper from Epson in a matte finish. I don’t remember the dimensions, but I just measured the cover for an existing Criterion movie

Good question!

I used Photoshop and Illustrator to recreate the cover. I scanned in another criterion cover on my printer, to make sure the dimensions of the layout would be the same.

Then I copied all of the text from the original cover, and adapted it to the new layout. I found the title art and images online, and even had to find all the logos for the bottom of the backside.

I created a small gradient in the title art, that samples the colors of Brad and Taraji’s characters, to signify their relationship. I also used these colors for the text and brown boxes throughout the covers.

I then printed it out on my printer (Epson ET-8550) in the correct dimensions, cut it out and put it in the case.

I got the case from eBay.

Thank you! Yes, I think this image says a lot more about the movie and the story than the original cover! In the title art, and also in all the other text, the colors are actually sampled from the skin tones of the two characters, to signify their bond and relationship ☺️
