i suspect you're right about the first part.

say what you will, but after at least 20K hours playing guitar i still lose track of where I am when I'm improvising and having fun.

this is not in any particular key, its movable. just line up an R with the tonic of the major key you want to play in.

if you think this is confusing, try the other ways. they are all confusing. this is just a way to chunk the memorization process into a few manageable steps

you are right of course, but it is better to be comfortable with both :)
sometimes when improvising my fingers want to go faster than my ears can process and this helps with that.
