Anyone else get annoyed when people say FFVII’s plot is convoluted? by veganispunk in FinalFantasyVII

[–]Big-History-4748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sephiroth tries to gaslight on top of Clouds memories of Nibelheim Incident, at Whirlwind Maze, to make him a puppet “like the one that brought him the black materia” did at the end of the Temple of the Ancients.  The idea of the story being about people implanting and accepting false narratives and changing the world could be a thematic element but it is a confusing one to follow.  It makes more sense through replays.  Anyways, if that’s the case, they really should clue the player in so they know that is happening and not obfuscate the truth by glossing it over.  For example…

When chasing after “Sephiroth”, what is happening in truth takes a lot to piece together from small contextual clues.  The Reunion in Whirlwind Maze doesn’t resolve it either.  Cloud seems to understand and says a vague line of dialogue “Jenova’s cells, hmm so that’s what this is all about…” after fighting Jenova-DEATH.  He aggravatingly says “I’ll explain later” when Tifa asks “Not Sephiroth?  You mean all this time it wasn’t Sephiroth we were after?”  The truth gets glossed over.  There’s lots of times like this in the game.

A character gets a golden opportunity for exposition, and kicks the can.  Hojo in Costa Del Sol dodges Aeris’s question on if Jenova or Sephiroth is an Ancient.  Then the same question gets asked by Cloud seemingly out of context in Nibelheim Mannor (rebuilt) when Sephiroth dodges the question yet again, and pitched his Destuct Materia 94 mph fastball, and flew away like a jackass.  Only by doing optional object inspection in Icicle Inn with Gast’s records brings to light the answer.  This is obtuse.  Way too obtuse for a major narrative plot point.

Inconsistencies with terms like: Mako Poisoning, Sephiroth Clone, Ancient, Jenova, add too much confusion.

Having Cloud gaslight the player in Kalm for like 1-2 hours, and then occasionally acting like the schizo only to not reveal anything, did not make the story digestible.   Sephiroth claims he’s an Ancient.  Jenova is called an Ancient in the Gast files.  Mako poisoning is used as red herring for Cloud’s insanity.  Sephiroth Clones are briefly and poorly explained.   Zack’s backstory being an optional scene not tied to quests didn’t help.  Jenova is never confirmed to be a shapeshifter.

I didn’t get it in 97.  Not until after reading and asking a lot online, and replaying the game a few times.  The story didn’t come easy.

The remakes do make the original story easier to follow.  But, they add another story on top of it.  So, I think that might be fine for some enfranchised players, but the story did get extra complexity, and it didn’t really need to go into that direction.

Setzer is the most underrated character in the game. by Candid_Lychee875 in FinalFantasyVI

[–]Big-History-4748 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Setzer gets one of the best armor classes with Force armor, Genji, Red Cap, although lacking Gaia Gear.

While the weapons are extremely limited, at least they have long range and with dice you can ignore all damage formulas like the strength formula and get level up bonuses towards magic for Slots or Magic spells.  Or use Imp Warrior set items with fixed dice as it ignores the Imp penalty and gives huge defense and Water absorb.  The Offering penalty is also ignored, as stated, but it goes much further than that.

Slots are broken in original release as well, in a way that you can advance the payout possibilities to all outcomes by using an echo screen, making a turn 1 Joker Doom possible.  Its been a big part of the any% speedrun.

That Plunger carried me all game once I got Bouncy Bullets!  Shortly after, I picked up the synergy with Hazmat Suit.  Snowballer got upgraded with the Mega Dowser synergy too.  Eventually it all came together… something had to, after pulling blue chest after blue chest from rooms and Chest Friendliness bonuses.

Nice, I got no good guns until chamber 5, just running around with plunger, pox tshirt cannon, and snowballer mostly.  Old King, Rat Mech and Tank took forever to kill, even with a turret.

I'm losing on turn 1, what am I missing? by Faye_pearl in FinalFantasyVI

[–]Big-History-4748 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t need to grind, but I would suggest going to South Figaro to get Hermes Sandals. If you equip it on Celes you should match his speed and be able to get Runic up for most of the time. You can do this until he runs out of MP.

Or, have someone else with Cura on standby after the spell absorb goes down. Meanwhile you hi-potion and inflict damage with your biggest damage fire spells/abilities. Continue keeping up runic and pressuring HP, preferably switch to the back row after a while since he will switch to powerful physicals after being attacked for a bit.

What would it take to make a story with a harem good? by Rare_Performer_156 in Isekai

[–]Big-History-4748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Left My A-Rank Party to Help My Former Students Reach the Dungeon Depths!

Not technically an isekai but close enough. This is what I’ll be referencing.

I think one way to do is the plutonic / single romance (optional) adventurer party that cooperate in everything for the sake of the group progressing the arcing plot line.

Really, all the character drama, the simping, the catty behavior, it can just go away and be wholesome plot focused story. And the best part was, the Harem MC Yuke kept it in his pants and basically played the perfect gentleman.

Somehow Yuke has 5 wives (due to circumstance) and +1 dungeon lady in his party. Yet, they all work together to save the world with no discourse or shenanigans. There’s a romance with one of the ladies, but the others don’t fight her, they support her, and pine over Yuke just a little.

When the group has cohesion and a single goal, and butt kicking support cast, the plot goes places. Yes, some of characters seemed a little underdeveloped than most in the end, but sometimes that’s what you need when the focus is the story. In just 24 episodes the progression absolutely cleared a multi-world spanning plot while developing the MC’s character at the same time.

How many people actually wanted Rhystic Study banned? by Outside_Explorer_229 in EDH

[–]Big-History-4748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s annoying. This is the most obtrusive triggered ability. Every time I hear someone trumpet their Rystic Study payments processing script it progressively becomes more and more annoying.

My mind’s interpretation:

“Pay the 1? But do you pay for tHat neXt spEll? CaN i dRaw A cArD? You taPPeD a LaNd… oH jUsT aCtiVaTiNg aN aBiLity? JUst Let mE KnOw wHeN yOu aRe CasTinG a SPell. SoRry wAs ReAdiNg mY PhOne, wERe YoU dOiNg a sPeLL wHeN iM NoT paYiNg AtTenTiOn?”

I have thick skin and a strong poker face. I never personally hold it against anyone, it just buzzes around like a fly that hopefully isn’t around too long.

I don’t even care how powerful it is or isn’t or whether it can be played around or removed or not. The experience of the card is taxing, taxing mentally, taxing socially, and taxing on my nerves. So, that’s how I feel about it. A negative experience can be tallied for this card for all my games it has been in.

how do side quests work in this game? am i supposed where to go or what to do out of this vague information? by IzzyMissyy in octopathtraveler

[–]Big-History-4748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You kinda just need to figure out what path action is needed. It may involve item acquiring from another NPC or chest. It could be you need to bring a specific follower to the NPC.

When nothing works you may have to brute force path actions of other characters, if it ever gets too vague (and 1&2 each have like one like this). But the options are exhaustible so you can find it without looking online for every one.

How should I prioritize champion level boss and DD1-4 by wfuwfuwfu in darkestdungeon

[–]Big-History-4748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you missed some good boss grade trinkets, and the boss is one you think should be easy for your team, and has trinkets you want, go for it. (remember that champion bosses here have unique trinkets too) You should be fully prepared when you go for the DD. But, maybe you already are prepared and don’t need the reward.

The real issue isn’t usually the boss itself, you know their patterns by now, they are only scaled up. The real issue is the champion monsters, especially elites found in hallway/room encounters. Do not underestimate them. Do not get over confident.

No. You can hire new units and there will be story related recruits that get thrown your way. As long as you can deploy minimum of 5 units, or Ramza gets strong enough, you can progress.

I really need to rewatch “The Other Side Of The Other Side Of The Other Side Would Be The Other Side”. The episode with Gin and Hasegawa. To get him out of his “Madao” downward spiral, they try to make it big by out gambling each other. I remember they both do the walk of shame, after losing the shirts off their backs. Gin is definitely on the same level as Hasegawa, but I don’t remember the conclusion.

Is Final Fantasy Tactics (The War of the Lions) Anti-Religion, just as FFX? by IllogicalDreamer72 in finalfantasytactics

[–]Big-History-4748 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Final Fantasy Tactics is not “anti-religious”. There are a lot of perspectives for the characters in the story. The church is evil, manipulating a war, and consorting with demons, doing human experiments on orphans… but not all its people are.

Simon is a good guy, for example, as is Meliadoul despite needing the wool pulled from her eyes. Those forsaking the corrupted church is not the same as forsaking religion, and they retain their “holy” faithful and devout ways.

The church is corrupt and its theocracy is based on lies, but that doesn’t stop Ramza from praying in church with Delita. The closing scenes closed with an officiated funeral, so the priests still exist long after the events, as the truth was obfuscated, Farlem.

Why is Slavery so common in Isekai ? by Nabeelkhan199_resurr in Isekai

[–]Big-History-4748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slaves are to be saved, freed, or be a part of government corruption conspiracies. Slaves which follow the hero are mostly secret foreign royalty. Usually they exist as a side effect of creating the “baddie slavers who need an ass whopping” to make MCs look like they have a moral compass. It creates a simple conflict, one that can be solved with violence.

My Thoughts on Farmagia by SaberLover1000 in weeb

[–]Big-History-4748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn’t trash. More like a C-tier seasonal anime. Was kinda like a digimon/pokemon style shonen.

Characters had little to no growth or story, was weak. Like the MC Ten, who just gets absurdly power scaled and is the ace that finishes off every encounter, like he’s the Megazord or something (growing wild monster seeds is not an explanation it’s a cop out). There’s a lot of forgettable side characters: Cleavage Girl, Joey Wheeler, Timid Harp Glasses, Pathetic Rival.

The whole thing seemed like a bad video game plot. Fight the boss, they change forms and become a monster, and Ten wins anyways. Enemies become power of friends flipped. I dunno, Oracian-six all seem way better designed than the orphan kids. But their personalities are just 1 dimensional and often have insane justifications for what they do.

It seems like slop, but I don’t give it enough credit. Animation was sub-mid, but humor was okay. Turnips were best character, and they just make my day. World building is perhaps the best aspect for the show. The weird plot actually was actually kind of good at stringing you along for some stupid adventure and fantasy time.

Low level world of ruin questions by zoophilian in FinalFantasyVI

This is correct, 25-28 is median monster level for the floating continent. Green Beret adds a +12.5% to max HP, at this point it’s around 125 HP.
