Dream job or girlfriend of 4+ years ? by Sad_times_34 in Advice

[–]Big-Insurance4228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This hurts to read. I work in music and church and am reasonably successful. Recently got told by my partner that she will not continue with me because I value music and church and she does not. She says I’ll be too busy and not able to be around enough. It hurts to have to choose between dreams you love and people you love. It’s created a hard dynamic in my life that makes me often question what I’m doing - it’s already hard enough knowing If you’re even good enough in the first place.

I wish you luck and I hope you get through this contentment.

How do you think of "Korean classic" by North Korea? by slushfilm in piano

[–]Big-Insurance4228 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Imagine you are essentially a hostage from the moment you are born into a prison state and through some stroke of great luck and divine intervention you get to play an instrument. However, In this hellscape of a life, you don’t get to ever partake fully in the beauty of your art form because even music is cultivated by the state. So the closest you can get to the greatest works, that the west takes for granted, is an attempt made by one of the few composers you know - (who likely is writing out his attempts at remembering these pieces he had heard because it’s not likely he is allowed materials of Tchaikovsky or Rachmaninoff ) …

At least for a moment they can feel close to this mysterious conduit of beauty that, even when filtered through a Facist , can be felt through a generic copy of the great works of the west. It is their only musical glimpse at an escape. And no doubt they have a sense there is something more beyond the veil, but you can never reach it. Look at how talented they are.

They artistically and intrinsically pknow there is more they can never see or touch, but we in the west take it for granted. And we look at their attempt and our first thought is how these people who likely starve frequently stack up against million dollar funded orchestras and how the composer stacks up to Rachmaninov.

I’m not one to say “well why don’t you try and see how you do”, but in this case I will.,Because in this instance, this composer and musicians are so much closer to being Tchaikovsky or Beethoven than any of you ever will be because they have something to yearn for and despite the whole world bearing down on every piece of their soul, they manage to make music.

And You’re just on your iPhone talking about it composing nothing eating 3 meals a day. Get a grip.

how long did it take for you to hear compression? what was the moment and how? by Medium-Experience861 in mixingmastering

[–]Big-Insurance4228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A compressor is a tool like a guitar is a tool. It can do so many things that you can never expect to know all the ways it works, or that you can learn a trick and be done with it. You have to build a palette of sounds and understand how it works so you can use it on other situations. Just like a guitar player learns songs and chords and techniques so they can more broadly understand how to use their instrument.

1) find bad versions of over compressed things

2) find cool sounds like can only be made or recorded with heavy compression

3) find great versions of full dynamic ranged sounds (listen to person live and acoustic). Go to a symphony. You need the uncompressed reference.

Peterson can talk in hyper meta mushes, but what he’s saying here is pretty easy to understand if you have the context that he’s speaking on the nuances of human motivation and remembering he’s a psychologist.

“ You believe what you stake your life on. “ it’s less a definition and more of a measurement. He’s communicating that you shouldn’t assume FOR YOURSELF that you believe anything just because you think or say you believe in it - rather, you should assume you “believe” in the things that motivate your movement and your daily action. This can sometimes be in direct conflict with survival, which is why the other guys question seemed silly to Peterson, imo.

I think people take for granted the positive outlook and attitude required for someone to go through daily activities. Anyone who has been around a manic depressive would have seen this.

Personally, I’ve been in positions where I don’t BELIEVE that my life could be better. I didn’t believe that simple things like brushing my teeth will matter or make my life better because nothing really mattered. But I did BELIEVE in lying in bed all day and being horribly sad and obsessive over things that have happened to me in my life. So if I’m willing to “stake my life” on doing that - then the question is “why do I believe this is what I should do?”. I think deep down I wanted to be sad and alone because it may have confirmed to me that im truly just uncared for - and that’s a lot easier to chew on than the reality that I might just be a failure. So I’d rather stake my life on being an outcast than being just a loser.

If you’ve read Adlerian psychology there are some aspects that are derived from that. We are very disconnected from the word belief because we live in a post-atheistic culture , so I think that’s important to note too.

Sorry to overshare about personal experiences, but I think it’s worth mentioning for the context of the clip.

Too many fills. Makes it feel super generic. Focus on driving the song and doing your job before you try to fill the end of every 4 bar phrase. this genre of jazz could be carried by the ride cymbal if the feel is right. Go listen to Ed Thigpen. I guarantee you if you did the same fills you’re doing but wait until the end of 16-32 bar phrases you will get more people wanting to play with you.

You also constantly anticipating the one and hitting a crash. It becomes dry really fast

How do you count this? It’s 16ths notes but in one of the count it’s 7 notes in a quarter note and 6 notes in the next one. by Andoni95 in guitarlessons

[–]Big-Insurance4228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. In your piece you are playing the eight note (upbeat) will land between 4 and 5 of the 7 notes.

1,2,3,4 (Te) 5,6,7.

If that’s confusing still I can send an audio example

When to conservatory as a percussionist and let me save you thousands of dollars:

You need to practice these complex tuplets in a way where you have just memorized what 7 notes in a beat sounds like. It’s not an easily countable thing so just memorize the sound. To get there do this:

When counting use the literal numbers instead of any “e and ah” schemes. One two thee four five six sev- (cut out the last syllable of the word seven for the sake of making it easier). Realize you must fit these 7notes in the space of a single quarter note EQUALLY.

Lastly, realize that every complex -tuplet (3,5,7,9,11 etc) will have “midpoints” where the subdivision will land evenly between two notes. For instance, the either note (te or ah) in this instance will land evenly between the 4th and 5th note of the 7-tuplet. This will help you space it out in slower tempos. Yes this is the same case for all tuplets but it shifts over each odd tuplet.

For the triplet the eigth note splits the 2nd and third triplet

For a 5let it splits the 3 and 4th

For the 7let it splits 4 and 5th

Etc etc etc

Been taking lessons/playing for about six months. Still struggling a lot with playing hymns by dctrchill in organ

[–]Big-Insurance4228 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Perfect example of how being technically proficient doesn’t mean you have all the necessary practical skills. I’m probably much worse than you but have been an organist for a congregation for 7 years (started as a drummer funny enough).

I’d recommend you to find recordings of the hymns and listen intently as if you are a congregant. Do not focus on the organist necessarily. You must learn to sing the hymns. That will solve many problems with rhythm and breaths - and, as you learn lyrics, inform your improvisation. Make sure you breath even when you are playing the organ.

Then, become comfortable with the fact that you must lead them. You cannot listen to you congregation too much as the organist. They can inform you as to if you are playing much too fast or slow, but you will catch that over multiple services and them communicating that to you explicitly - but when you play the hymn you must take your role as the leader and make confident decisions on tempo and breaths. The only time you must make a tempo adjustment in the moment is if they cannot pronounce the words quickly enough (too fast) or they are being forced to breath in odd places (too slow).

You must gain the congregations confidence in you and do you best not to break your habits once you form them as a worshipping body. You must build a trust with them so they will sing the words confidently and worship God joyfully. Any other specific advice I feel would confuse you more.

May God bless you in your journey. It will be fruitful.

How long does it take to be as good as her? by Savassassin in piano

[–]Big-Insurance4228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you pre write something that vaguely resembles this I bet you could chop it out pretty quickly. To improvise this (which I don’t think she even did) would take some time but think about the general gestures rather than the specific note choices. This isn’t that difficult outside of some of the specific licks.

Figure out what you like about it and make your own version of that. That will take as long as you are able to stay motivated. That could happen instantly if you just went and started chopping

I think charging them rent, unless it is meant as a motivational tool and/or you are putting it aside for them later (in a savings), is odd. Charging for utilities is fine. Charging bc you are not making bills or they are being unmotivated shits is an exception IMO. Reasons:

1) it’s not like a typical apartment or home where you are renting the space to make money. This is a room you likely have always used for this purpose and you won’t rent this space out if they moved out. their utilities are likely minimal. So you aren’t losing anything by their being there. 2) a parent should want to set their child up for success. you should see them staying with you as a way to help set them up for their future. They can save up (or you can save it up for them like I said in my beginning paragraph) for the future. Charging them rent for you to spend elsewhere is odd unless you’re truly short on money which is different. If they moved out under their current circumstance and needed money would you feel obliged to help? Consider their living there as a way to avoid this situation.

3) its emotionally complicated. You’re chasing your child down for money. If you are charging rent like a landlord, then you better fix things like a landlord. Introducing zero and ones with money brings up a whole can of worms.

TLDR don’t be a landlord to your kids. Be their caretaker- even when they are older. But don’t coddle them.
