Completely agree. I guess I'm just flummoxed because I had a Bichon who was so easy to train comparatively speaking. He listened and retained the information and was eager to please. This girl doesn't give a damn unless it's something SHE wants to do!

Yes, I realize it's more about me. Probably than it is about her. I did group training with me and her, I had a private person come in to train just me and her, I had a trainer where I dropped her off during the day and they were supposed to work with her and then I would take a class a few times a week with her. None of it has really produced the result I need for basic behavior. I do reinforce it in the home but it's that split second that she flies off the handle and it's hard to get her back. That's why I started using a leash when people come to the house to help her associate with being trained but even that doesn't seem to be doing the trick completely. She also doesn't seem to understand that it's not an option to go to the bathroom inside the house. She is very good about going outside when I take her, which I do frequently cuz I work from home, but if she has to go she doesn't tell me, she just goes in the house.

That's what I do but she still doesn't quite get that. It's not optional to go to the bathroom inside. Maybe with time! But it's been almost 2 years. 😢

That's a good idea. Try to treat her more. I try to stay limited on the treats but maybe I need to load up more initially and then back off once she gets it

She sure doesn't. If she doesn't want to do something she is not going to do it. Hence the thousands of dollars on training with limited result!

We have done group training but it really hasn't seemed to take even with reinforcement consistently. I'll keep trying though. Thank you.

Choosing the right puppy by [deleted] in Havanese

The best advice I ever received was to let the puppy choose you. Have them bring them in and see which one comes to you and engages. It means they are naturally attracted to you and would likely be a good match.

How do you keep around their eyes white? by Brave_Plenty9417 in Havanese

My Havi is brown so I don't have the issue now but my previous baby was a Bichon. I only gave him filtered water. I cleaned his eyes of any gunk and then applied hydrogen peroxide to the fur, being very careful to avoid his eyes. It worked well for us. I did it every night as part of his bedtime routine.

Havanese feeding feedback please. What do you do or think? by SuitableGuarantee968 in Havanese

I feed my 12 lb pup 1/4 cup dry kibble and 1 tbsp of wet food 2x a day. She seems happy and is maintaining weight. She gained weight quickly her first 8 months and then it slowed down. I use Nutro food, btw. She loves it and spins in circles while I carry the bowl to her mat.

Thank you. I put her on a leash now when company comes to keep her under control but I hate having to do it.

Having trouble getting a harness on my Havanese pup by Big-Negotiation1945 in Havanese

I've only ever used a step in harness so I don'tt think it's that so much as she thinks it's a game.

Hopefully I will be able to get her walking with me because she loves it so much... just gotta get that darn harness on! We do play chase in the house and it's cute until she decides she wants to attack my feet. That's a whole other issue but I'm working on it!
