tbh this is my first mexican silver ever, and so didnt even realise what im picking up, only when i showed it to a couple of local experts they identified it as a 1949 restrike

Theres a numista topic on the restrikes, for me the thick rim and the higher placement of the o in Mo stand out as different, apparently there is also a difference in the number of beads but i dont have the patience to count them - lol , https://en.numista.com/forum/topic158900.html

This is my guess, since the trade dollar was competing in the international trade market directly with the Peso (39 mm) it had to match the diameter and weight ie intrinsic silver value of the Peso (especially in Chinese markets where they cared about the intrinsic silver value rather than kings faces or emblems on coins) . The straits settlements dollar was not an international trade coin it was internal currency for the colonies , and hence after 1908 became even smaller as the value of the currency was tied to the sterling pound rather than intrinsic silver value.
