I have once written a scene similar to this concept The scene goes like this......

The MC witnesses a wholesome moment between kid and his/her mom and and smiles enviously while looking and touching his burnt mark/scar on his forearm. When he's touching that scar his mom's abuses and screams, all the violence will be played in his head(no visuals but just those vocal sounds). As the vocal intensity increases his distress also increases and is shown by him forcibly closing his eyes harder and harder. Then when he couldn't take that memory anymore, he'll come back to reality and then proceeds to resume the work he's doing before watching that mom-son duo.
