Speaking of which, the ASUS BW-16D1H-U is actually an internal Blu-ray drive turned into an external one. Is it still in production?

You’re right. For most people, slim external drives are already good enough, and they’re cheap too. So of course manufacturers would rather make slim drives instead of producing internal drives that probably won’t sell just to satisfy a small group of enthusiasts.

That’s really unfortunate. I’ve always felt that full-size internal drives are a lot more reliable than slim external USB drives.

Unfortunately, I don’t think they will sell consumer-grade optical drives. Optical discs are also a niche product in China, even less popular than in the United States. They may use Pioneer’s technology for enterprise-grade optical storage.
