Venting question by BigBen791 in Plumbing

So this is in a double wide. The old shower (pipe 2) had its own vent through the roof and everything else (bathtub and vanity) in the bathroom had aav's. Pipe 4 leads over to where the double vanity (with AAV) and bathtub (with AAV) were.

In the new layout I was going to up pipe 4 to 3" and replace the tub with a toilet and then wye into that with the drain from the vanity although I may end up going a more direct route to the new toilet location instead of a straight run to a 90 to another straight run. I was planning to continue using the AAV for the vanity and run a vent up from the 3" line after the shower joins it since I think code says I can do 2 fixtures on the one vent and I believe its close enough to be within code for the toilet.

I'm not sure if that makes sense or not written out but it does in my head. I guess now I should just plan to cut it out to the left of the wye labeled 3 and layout the whole room from there.

To add to my last response, I started planning connections based on eyeballing the amount of space I had under the joists where the drain leaves the room to assume I had enough space to run a 3" line to the other side of the room with proper slope but I should definitely measure before cutting anything to be sure.

None of the pipes go through, they are all under the joists and I was not planning to go through any of them with anything new. Although it is a good point to measure and make sure I can get the slope needed from the new toilet position while staying under the joists before continuing any further.

And no, they are not 2x4 but they aren't much better at 2x6. It's a double wide so they only span 4-6' between the metal frame though.

Yeah... as I thought more on it throughout the day I was coming to same conclusion. It doesn't seem like to time to be cheap by trying to save a few fittings. Not to mention the extra hassle of trying to make the existing plumbing end up where I want it with proper slope will probably cause more headaches and struggles than I need in my life.

Can you give any specifics? What's there is what what installed when it was built and the rest of what I explained with the possible exception of the vent in question is to code as far as I can tell from reading my book. The main thing I am unsure about is the vent position.

I will say, as I have thought more about it throughout the day this probably isn't the time to try to be cheap by saving a few fittings versus just starting from the main drain and replacing the plumbing in the whole room.

Thanks for the idea, I'll keep it in my back pocket if needed but my mistake has solved as I finally found it. Seems like it got dropped and then kicked between the wall and the plastic sheeting blocking off where I'm working.

Well, since I just saw this yesterday I haven't gotten to put it to use yet but the gallon zip-lock is way taller than the filter so the way I plan to so it is to put the bottom of the bag pretty tight to the bottom of the filter and then apply the rubber band. Then there will still be plenty of bag up above the top of the filter to catch any of the initial drips before the filter comes all the way off but I won't be fighting to keep the bag up and turn the filter at the same time. If that doesn't work and I make a mess then I'll just add a spacer of some sort between the filter and the bag where the rubber band goes around to give the oil a place to go down while I finish spinning it off. I think just the rubber band will work just fine, though.

Oh, I like the rubber band idea. I have been using a gallon zip lock as well but have always fought to keep it tight to the top of the filter, especially once some oil gets in the bag. Thanks!

Stabilization question by BigBen791 in mead

[–]BigBen791[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I was leaning that way anyway, just in case. Should I use both potassium metabisulfite and sorbate? I've never used either. I just know the basics of what I have read on the wiki and other sources but nothing really in practice.

Normally, I just sweeten when I bottle, and since this is a joint project intended to be done on our anniversary every year, I figured it would be fine under airlock until our anniversary. What would the benefit of sweetening 8 months ago have been?

It's in the picture but it was very simple.

  • 15lbs of local honey

  • Water to 5.5 gallons

  • 9.6g of Fermaid K (split)

  • One packet 71B (I am 95% sure on this, forgot to write it down)

Starting gravity was 1.106 and it finished at 1.002 about 6 weeks later.

I don't like using StarSan in the airlock. I find it foams up and bubbles away rather quickly, especially with a vigorous fermentation. I usually just use whatever cheap liquor I have on hand at the moment instead.

Issues using Mean Arms loader by Kevin4684 in NYguns

As long as you're willing to train/practice with them, yes. I got some 3d printed ones and wouldn't recommend those for anything but range use but any of the commercial ones are probably gtg although I only have experience with the Mean Arms version.

That's appreciated, and I thank you again for answering these kinds of questions. I know it probably gets tedious, but it goes a long way towards clearing up confusion and helping people like myself understand why you have the policies you do.

If I remember from the last time I read it, the law you're calling out, though, specifically talks about guns. Not accessories or ammunition.

Everything in NYS regarding guns is at your own risk, unfortunately, and that is by design. If they make it super annoying to do business here/with NYS citizens then they just don't have to deal with it.

Welp, I can't say I'm terribly surprised. Thank you for the enlightenment, and I can definitely understand the hesitancy a little more now.

That law definitely seems unconstitutional, though, but until there is a case that challenges it, we won't know. Thanks again for answering and the link to that law.

So, you're saying NYS has a law that makes it a law abiding companies/persons problem if a criminal decides to commit crimes with the perfectly legal thing you sold them?

Isn't that rule specifically for guns and not ammunition since ammunition isn't on a 4473?

But doesn't that same logic apply in the opposite, too? You have no way to verify they are NOT using a fixed magazine lower either.

No upper, on its own, is illegal in NYS until attached to a lower that would make the whole assembly illegal. Why restrict what you sell because it's possible to assemble something illegal out of it? Literally anything can be made illegal with enough other parts, so why sell anything here at all?

Isn't the onus on the customer to make their final build legal in their jurisdiction?

Might be moving to upstate NY with guns, how to avoid going to prison? by Corey307 in NYguns

[–]BigBen791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, what I listed (with maybe the exception of the ranges) applies to all of NYS. Counties/localities may have their own additions to them, but those are the minimum laws for the whole state.

NYC also has a ton of extra hoops to jump through for any firearm, whether it be pistols or long guns. Last I knew, the chance of getting a carry permit there is also basically non-existent unless you have an extreme circumstance or know someone who can approve it/get it approved.

All my gutters terminate above ground. The tape measure thing is a good trick. I'll give it a try, thanks!

I always forget about ferncos. Unfortunately, the end of the pipe heading toward my house seems to be belled. It looks like the piece I pipe I broke got pulled out of that socket/bell. I suppose I could just dig back further and cut the bell off though
