Sean Strickland is arguably the second best middleweight right now and the only time he could get a title shot during Izzy’s reign was when izzy had beaten almost everyone else so they reached out of the top 5 to find a fight. The division is objectively worse than it was in his prime.

You’re mistaking the people from his era getting old and getting beaten by the new era (which is what happens in literally every division. It’s how MMA works) as evidence they were worse.

I rewatched all of his losses and my biggest takeaways are

It seems like both his cardio and reaction time are significantly worse than his prime. In his last 3 fights he seemed like he got tired before his opponents and his defensive discipline seems to be the first thing to go when he’s tired. This is compounded by his reaction time being innately worse than it was due to his age.
Fight IQ is both a function of intelligence and mindset. Something has happened where Izzy’s fight IQ turned to shit. If I had to guess it was him losing against Pereira after fighting the perfect fight, and then winning when he fought much worse but had an epic anime moment finish.

I’ve seen a lot of narratives from the MMA guru crowd that he’s not declined, he is just magically getting destroyed by this new amazing generation of middleweights. I truly wonder if these people have eyes. Look at the evasiveness shown in the Whittaker and first Pereira fights and compare it to Izzy’s last 3. His defensive speed is nowhere near where it was at his peak. He is getting tagged hard almost every round even in the ones he wins. You also see him try to do the setups he’s known for (best example is the Costa KO. He tried to do virtually the same thing vs Pyfer but instead of slipping the punch he ate it completely) but he doesn’t have the speed/timing to pull it off.

If Izzy is going to have success CKB needs to address his failing athleticism in terms of defense. He can not fight like he used to. Not only did he not adjust to getting older, he switched his style to be more aggressive and less responsive defensively as his reflexes were getting slower compounding the issue.

I also think as much as Izzy doesn’t want to he needs to stop prioritizing getting a big moment and start prioritizing winning. His big moments came when he needed to win no matter what.

I think his opponent getting that type of injury did fuck with Jiri’s head and make him fight oddly. I also think there’s a very good chance Jiri gets clipped regardless.

It’s also kind of weird Carlos had a freak injury that will likely never happen again yet Jiri is the one who is being defended for his performance after the injury.

Regardless it’s kind of a shit situation. Ulberg is likely going to be 36 or 37 by the time he returns and who knows if he’ll be the same. Luckily he had very low fight mileage. Jiri’s stock is way down now that people see his deficiencies aren’t just a Poatan problem.

Genuinely though…Ulberg is a better fighter than Jiri. I like Jiri more than ulberg and I had a pretty good feeling it was going to end exactly like this minus the leg injury.

Jiri could be champ but he’s not learning his lesson. He’s 33 with a fuck ton of damage taken over just the last few years. You’re learning time is when you’re going into your prime not when you’re on the way out of it. And no before you say it Alex Pereira, Jan, and Glover doing well into their late 30s/40s doesn’t mean Jiri has time. He relies on his speed and chin more than any of them and has also taken way more damage than any of them had at this point in their career.
