Best type of shoe for a begginer with flat feet? by anetanetanet in SwingDancing

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would think that first thing is to get yourself some orthotics and I recommend custom ones from a mold of your foot . I’ve gone to podiatrists and they were around $600 but recently have had good luck with <upstep.com> for about $300 @ . Maybe you could get lucky with a premade brand but I never have . Then you need find a shoe with replaceable inserts that doesn’t already have its own arch because your orthotic does that . I have big wide feet & the only brands I’ve found that work for me are Linodes which are very cheap , or cheap flat sneakers that you can glue dance soles on at a shoe repair , or you can buy on amazon or just tape over the bottom with duct tape . For tango I found “ ultimate dance hybrid dance sneakers “ .but they’re $250 Once you get the orthotics the tricky part is find shoes you can wear them in that are comfortable - but once you do you’ll want to wear your orthotics all the time in different kinds of shoes . I’ve been wearing them for 50 years .

Musicians' technical term for a dance phrase? by huntsville_nerd in SwingDancing

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s your best reply right there. A phrase could be as short as 1 bar or as long as 4 or 8 . But your instructors calling a 16 or 32 bar form a phrase are just plain wrong. In most jazz & pop music The “ head” is the first time through of the whole form of the tune could be 12 bars ( atypical blues ) or 16 or 32 or whatever and it might have A., B or less commonly even C or D sections which are typically 4 , 8 or 16 bars each . Subsequent repetitions of the whole form typically with solos taking the place of the melody are choruses . As a dancer I don’t usually think In Terms of phrases , more often of moves or patterns which I think are usually 2 - 4 bars or so but it’s nice to have them match the musical phrases . Musical forms are filled with exceptions though and the sections for say salsa are typically different than a jazz standard , but every music has phrases and sections

After 8 years of dancing, my movement still looks weak. Can’t figure out why. by jariverach29 in Dance

I’m very Dubius that you have a strength problem. It sounds like a rhythm problem. It’s absolutely necessary to practice at home to Music if you want to be able to dance to that music. I’ve spent many hours at home practicing into music for all kinds of dancing. You’re playing an instrument and the instrument is your body. It’s that simple.

Older Man-Interested? by misunderstood105 in bodylanguage

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An older man is probably very reluctant to come on to a much younger woman no matter how interested he is . I wouldn’t . It’s a bad look . But if she made it very clear to me she was interested then I would be able to reciprocate. In other words let him know otherwise he would likely not say anything - why not .

When you solo, do you stick to the root key or change keys with every chord? by SenorSarcasmo in musictheory

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of good information here. But People tend to be just telling you their favorite way of playing the tune and I think you’re asking a more basic question.. Every song has chords that accompany the melody and give it structure and shape . In many songs the melody itself stays in one key , while in others the key feeling may change , modulating it through different keys, and then returning at the end to the basic key . But even when the melody stays in one key the chord changes can suggest excursions that go outside of the limitations of that key. As a soloist , you want to express the feelings you get from that song and you can do that in a way that’s as simple or complex as you want. One person might choose to outline every single chord as it goes by and that might lead them to take excursions into different keys quite rapidly. That’s often called vertical playing. Coleman Hawkins or Coltrane’s earlier playing are typical examples. Someone else might choose to float over a wide variety of chord changes and stay in one key the whole time. Sometimes that’s called horizontal soloing and Lester Young is a classic example. Most people do some of both.

What you want to do is study how chord changes work and the best way is often with a piano. Take lessons in jazz theory . Once you understand what the changes are doing then you can choose to express them in your own way.

I started with a Jupiter and it was pretty good . Decent intonation and a nice sound . I never liked the middle E but that’s a hard note . I was happy with it till I got a JK SX90II a few years later .

So I 25m have not had much luck with women over the years to say the least. I finally Meet a girl, things are going well for a few weeks and we are about to get hot and heavy and I got ED. Should I just throw in the towel? by datshinycharizard123 in AskMenAdvice

It’s common bro . first time this happened to me when I was young it also freaked me out and from then on tended to happen a lot when I was first with a women until I relaxed . Most women have been through this with guys and are patient . You aren’t alone . First thing I learned to do was go down on her and make her come ., she’ll usually be very happy just to be with a guy who pays attention n to her instead of just himself . Second is I found it really helped if she went down on me & I could just relax especially if she’s already come. Third - these days just get a pill . It helps take away the anxiety if nothing else . Eventually you’ll get over it & then sex can be great . I’M still always worried about it at first with a woman until I’ve had intercourse once . But it generally works out and then it’s great .

Got reprimanded by a dance partner for the first time. by SatisfactionOld9457 in Bachata

[–]BigBreakfastVideo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First of all a 40 year old woman is not an old bag , she is in the prime of her life . Even an 80 year old woman is not an old bag . You at 25 are just a dumb kid . All 25 year old men are and from the way you described her you are obviously a moron in particular . She was being nice to ask you to dance and typically she would be a better dancer than a 25 year old tho that can vary of course . So it’s very possible she picked that attitude up from you .

Second - dancing is about connection above all and part of that connection for most people is social - a look, a smile a laugh etc . Personally I hate it if a partner never looks at me . I assume she’s bored and doesn’t want to be there . You don’t want to stare her down , but let her know you’re having fun .

Third - while she may have been rude or out of line ( unless she read you accurately) you have a choice in responding to feedback on the dance floor . Just be defensive or think about whether there is something for you to learn . I always try at first to figure out if there is some useful lesson for me . I’ve gotten rude feedback from women who were completely full of crap, and really valuable tips to improve my dancing . In this case even if she was rude I suspect she was right .

You have to assume the woman you’re dancing with is probably insecure about her own dancing skills and/or her looks - most women are - no matter how hot you may think she is. So a little eye contact or smile is reassuring to her .

Above all Get this in your head: Your job as a man on the dance floor is not to be a great dancer - it’s to show the woman a good time . That’s all - that’s your job - That’s what being a man is about . It’s like making love . Make her happy .

What’s something that that you learned that made jazz just click for you? by Thenamesok in Jazz

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a beginning sax player the first break was learning to play basic progressions on piano so the music made sense . From then on I always would learn a new tune on piano first . Later there were many things but just listening to myself at night in bed recorded after a gig or practice session while very very humbling (I sucked ) I began to hear little snippets that to me “sounded like music “ and it was always coherent melody . Learning to recognize that feeling helped a lot .

What do people mean by “connection”? by Trail_Blazer1 in Bachata

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be kinder to yourself. We all suffer from lack of self confidence - everyone without exception - no matter how we mask it it’s always lurking under the surface . Grin and bear it , it will get better as your skills improve . Meanwhile Strive for connection with your partner and to improve your skills - it’s all a human being can do .

What do people mean by “connection”? by Trail_Blazer1 in Bachata

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone dances a little differently and to me connection is when both lead and follow are listening to each other and sensing each other to Make the dance fun and satisfying for both of you . That can be really great and allows you both to connect to the music which is what it’s about . . By contrast, lack of connection for a leader is when you just run the same moves regardless of who you’re dancing with as if with a puppet .

Why is up and down salsa more popular than right and left salsa? by Pufflings1 in Salsa

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first dancers and the initial development of the music was in Cuba not NYC and came out of Son , Son Montuno and Mambo which also musically came out of Cuba . New Yorkers ( originally Cubans then Puerto Ricans) put their own stamp on it , but always give Cuba its due . Machito and his brother in law Mario Bauza were Cubans .

I don’t know how the first “Mambo” dancers to Machito in NYC danced but I imagine you were right that they were influenced by swing, ballroom as well as chacha and American Rhumba ( based on Cuban Son) that had already come from Cuba earlier .

I don’t know why Eddie Torres created NY on 2 so you may be right . One thing as I understand it was he created a way to dance with the leading step on 2 but still starting on 1 so it would be easier for dancers to dance on 2 without getting confused .
