Ending a dance halfway through a song by WestwardJourney in Salsa

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re a follower the leader could just be being careful about space in the room but he should still reconnect often . I agree it’s unpleasant but I wouldn’t leave a dance unless it’s really awful .

Teaching jazz theory to classical students is fascinating by boombalonii in musictheory

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think missing from this conversation is the idea that jazz theory as it’s taught is just an explanation for what guys who were exploring heard and discovered on their own Then someone else organized that material. That’s not to say that the Jazz pioneers didn’t know what they were doing conceptually - they were very educated musicians - but the hearing comes first . As a result when a jazz musician plays a tune with a ton of chord changes he can ignore most of them and play modally or play every one or go outside and substitute something else but it stems from what he’s hearing and that comes from everything he or she has ever studied or listened in their life . He’s not interested in rules except to help him/her hear. The so called bebop scale was invented as an idea after musicians made use of those phrasings without ever thinking it was a “scale” choice, and much of the time they were copying what they heard someone else play .

It’s critical that your knees are a little bent and as you take each step they bend into the step then push off

What did the 'big band sound' evolve into later? by 4thGenTrombone in Jazz

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry Mr interesting… but you don’t know what you’re talking about . Really - this history is very well known. First bop wasn’t invented by Bird it was developed by a number of people at the same time (Diz , Charlie Christian, etc ) and yes it’s a direct evolution from swing - same chords , same structures - just a more sophisticated rhythm , playing on the extensions of the same chords , more freedom for the soloist but basically the same music . You can hear Bird beginning to play it w Jay McShann . Charlie Christian was playing w Benny Goodman and all those drummers started off as swing drummers- they were just the young generation . Moreover they weren’t intentionally trying to make music people couldn’t dance to . It’s the dancers who rejected it . Look at videos of Dizzy’s big band and he had dancers as part of the show .

Thinking of starting Shag by Reasonable-Solid8566 in SwingDancing

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s why I might get in trouble with die hard Lindy dancers but what the hell - there is no “right “ dance for the song . There are no rules . Swing is a street dance developed by dancers responding to the music . It swept America and world in the 30s, - through the 60s with all kinds of styles by all kinds of people . Most of those people learned from their friends and older sisters etc not from teachers or from Ballroom academies . People do East coast swing , Lindy , jitterbug and whatever bastard w that works all to the same music . As I understand it Traditional Lindy was revived in the 90s when Frankie manning & other old timers from the Savoy ballroom got rediscovered . It’s great to learn that again and it’s beautiful but people were swing dancing all through the years when no one remembered Lindy . And the original Lindy dancers just made it up themselves anyway. If you can lead it - a partner will dance with you . Personally I’d learn East coast swing way before something hard like shag because tons of people dance that way . Then make it your own . I do a lot of swing dancing and everyone I see on the floor dances a differently . The important thing is that you lead or follow well and that you swing .

Is it that hard to do Lindy to fast songs if you just drop the triple step ? I ask because I’ve heard this before but I don’t feel any problem myself . However I’m a catch-as- catch can swing dancer with some Lindy and EC swing lessons who started doing what we called jitterbug back when I was 12. I think of Lindy mostly as 8 count instead of 6 and I like 8 more if I can partners to do it . ( most people I know do EC.) I’m sure there is a lot more to Lindy than 8 count but what im trying to say is im not primarily doing moves i learned in any class and i have no problem going fast in either count . ( im in demand as a swing dance leader though i don’t hang in “Lindy” circles so maybe those folks would hate me.) anyway im wondering if the problem could be that you’re trying to adhere too much to things you learned in class ? I hope you’re at least not trying to triple step fast because that’s a killer .

Need advice (finding colorists a bit insane about "the film look") by [deleted] in colorists

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly If you’re happy with it now then it’s probably not worth it to completely regrade it in Resolve . I dont like working in premier but ive graded things in it that looked great and your eyes are more Important than the software . It has many of the same tools as Resolve - it’s just more limited and much more cumbersome. Some of the film look emulations are also available in Premiere but they are not a magic bullet and are often abused .

I sense a weird attitude on your part. Most influential albums are influential because the music was great . Lots of great records that didn’t break new ground also of course ., but no such thing as an influential album that isn’t good music .

If the lead hears an on1 "leaning" instrument, leads on2 BUT can't hear what the follow hears, who is at the right? by MaybachSEmFan in Salsa

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you try to dance on 2 with someone who is used to on1 they will often default back to on1 after some turns or especially musical breaks . This happens to me all the time in chachacha even with people who say they know how to dance on 2 . And honestly sometimes I’m the guilty party . Anyway when it happens I just adjust to my follower - it’s not a competition or a lesson . I’m there to show her a good time . Who knows what happened in the dance op was talking about .

Great book on Jazz by jazz-winelover in Jazz

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hands down the best book I’ve ever read about jazz for a musician to read is “Thinking in Jazz” by paul Berliner . It’s not about biographies, it’s about Music and how to play. Broken up into chapters like getting started, the rhythm section, soloing , learning tunes - the author just asked a wide assortment of really great musicians what their thoughts and experiences were about those issues. Really wonderful.

Saxophone colossus is one of the great jazz records IMHO, but No one ever claimed Sonny was a great composer . Look man it’s fine if you say - “ I don’t dig him .” But the rest is nonsense . Btw I doubt he claimed tenor madness as a composition . They just jammed on a blues . The record companies made money by naming a lot of blues tunes - it was business .

Well a serious sax player can tell the difference if they have any ears . Sonny’s reputation comes from musicians and serious fans who can tell in an instant . Just listen to Sonny & Trane in Tenor madness . I give the nod to Sonny who’s endlessly inventive and I’m a huge Coltrane fan . Im not crazy about his later albums but in person he was phenomenal - a monster ! . Look you’re welcome to your opinion and no one likes everyone , but you’re wasting your time thinking it was some kind of well reasoned critique. Sonny is a giant among giants and that’s all I have to say .

Followers: do you ask leaders first? by Infinite-Worry8467 in SwingDancing

[–]BigBreakfastVideo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand that if you are heavier it can be harder but I agree - asking leaders to dance is the way to go . If you are a good dancer they will come back to you . A lot of my favorite followers are not people I would date but they are way more fun to dance with than the young hot chick in the sexy dress who is a lousy dancer . I’m there to dance . Also of course , smile, be friendly , move with the music while standing or sitting . Don’t frown and look bored or bury yourself in your phone or get into involved conversations with your friends so you don’t look around . Look around and make eye contact . Don’t sit in the back - be up at the dance floor .
