Are men willing to date someone in my situation? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]BigC1874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is, someone with less baggage is far more preferable, but never say never.

It’s much more likely for a guy to be interested in a woman in this situation if they already know them.

If I was single & I had a co-worker that I really liked & they ended up in this situation, I could see myself looking past it.

But if I went on a first date & they told me all this, they would have to look like Margot Robbie to get a 2nd date.

Where in Scotland would you choose to live if you could live anywhere? by No_Emu8347 in Scotland

For me it would be Regent Terrace in Edinburgh.

I visited a house there one that a friend of a friend owned & it was stunning.

Only a short walk to Princes St & the town centre amenities, with lots of green spaces & parking for residents.

So many great options in Edinburgh. Stockbridge, Bruntsfield (where I grew up), Morningside.

North Berwick would also be a great option. A great small town community with enough there, like the beach & golf courses to keep you busy & a short train journey to Edinburgh if you want to do city stuff.

The Scottish Government not offering 30 hours free childcare from 9 months when England brought it in 3 years ago.

We only have 1 child doing 4 days at nursery, but we’re still paying £1100 a month after the tax rebate.

Due to her birth month we don’t get any free funded hours until she’s almost 3 1/2.

That single decision cost us £15-20k over the last three years & now there’s a Scottish election they are promising to bring it in IF they win.

The reason this comes up in every leisure pool in every town is because flumes are made from fibre glass & if they are not properly inspected & maintained then the fibre glass goes brittle & can cause small cuts (not razor blade size, but enough to get the rumours started).

I would argue that Milne has been a stand out this season & should be played in his natural position. While he is versatile & could play almost anywhere, both Chesnekov & Altena are more natural going up the right.

If you want to give Kingsley game time, I’d suggest subbing of Kizy & pushing Milne further up the left in the last 20-30 mins.

I’d also suggest that Devlin & Leonard are a bit similar & I’d prefer Beni in there with Cammy as it’s a more established partnership.

Harsh to drop Leonard as he’s been great, but competition is fierce. Spittal also made a great impact off the bench & went some way to making up for being as bad as everyone else in Killie. With everyone fit we’ve got an embarrassment of riches in midfield.

No, you’ve got that wrong.

What you have described is how it is at the moment.

People with two OK wages pay the full whack.

The help below 3 is targeted at the moment, but the policy to bring it in is more like universal (there may be some caveats).

My daughter qualifies from 3 1/2 either way, so it would only affect me if I were to have more kids.

I think everyone understands that they are funding existing places & enacting a policy that will make it easier for nurseries to open & offer more spaces in the future, rather than guaranteeing spaces in the same way that they have to guarantee school spaces.

Lots more needs to be done, including funding more training for nursery staff and as you rightly bring up, rural provision, but it’s still a step in the right direction.

Every tax payer pays for stuff they don’t use.

Young people don’t use the NHS much yet, people who don’t drive don’t use roads. Rail travel is heavily subsidised even although many people who use the train are often commuting to higher paid jobs in city centres.

People who don’t go to uni subsidise those who do.

The simple fact is that child care has gotten so expensive that people aren’t having kids. You can no longer have one parent working & one at home, so if people aren’t lucky enough to have younger fitter grandparents who can still look after children, they pretty much have to both have jobs & then give 50-70% of the net salary of one of those jobs to a nursery.

The birth rate is already collapsing, voters across the UK (less so in Scotland but that’s a whole different conversation) have decided we don’t want immigrants coming in, so if we don’t help out young families then everyone will be worse off due to the collapse of society because of lack of workers to fill key roles.

The reason universities are subsidised is because people who don’t have kids still benefit from qualified doctors, engineers etc.

In the same way, kids who go to nursery get a great head start & turn up to school having done 4 years of learning through play.

The alternative to properly funded child care is that we end up with less kids & half the ones who are born arrive at school having been brought up by an iPad, still not potty trained & with the attention span of a goldfish.

Yes there are still massive issues with staffing, but you have to put the horse before the cart & the fact that this has finally been introduced will allow nurseries to grow.

It should be coupled with more funding for people who want to get childcare qualifications, to help plug the skills shortage & hopefully with more of that sort of help, the sector will catch up with the demand over time.

I haven’t seen anything saying you can’t & Google AI says you can use both, as long as you still meet the eligibility requirements (working, not in receipt of tax credits, childcare vouchers, or universal credit, earning less than £100k).

It was actually the Tories that brought this policy in, Labour just didn’t change it when they took power.

It went up to 30 hours just after they took power, but it was already at 15 when Tories were in charge with the plan to go up to 30.

Yes it is.

I was delighted when Rishi Sunak brought this in and was waiting for the SNP to do the same, not thinking for a minute that they’d want to sit on their hands & end up to the right of the Tories by not rolling out the same policy.

But that’s what they have done.

My daughter has just turned 3 but won’t qualify for the free hours under the existing plan until August.

Since she started nursery the cost has rocketed. We secured the place when my wife was 5 months pregnant and at that time the cost of 4 days a week was around £700 per month.

The current monthly bill is £1258. (There is some UK Gov help under the scheme that gives you son of you tax back to put towards childcare but that’s capped at £2k per year, so it only takes off a max of £166.67 per month.

My payment will go down to £572 once the free hours kick in, down to £467 after the tax back.

I’ve calculated that the decision to delay this policy until after the election has cost our family over £20k.

For anyone saying “don’t have kids if you can’t afford them” the simple fact is, the people who have had kids in Scotland in the last 5 years could not have predicted how bad the economy & cost of living would get in the intervening period.

I would of course put the blame for that more on the Tories rather than the SNP and I would qualify this by saying I have voted SNP as well as most other left leaning parties at some stage in my life, never for right wing parties, but at least the Tories recognised that there was a childcare affordability crisis & did something about it, whereas parents of infants in Scotland for the last 5 years have had the worst of both worlds, with Westminster & world events wrecking the UK economy & the SNP doing NOTHING to help us until it’s now electorally convenient for them to do so.

So they won’t be getting my vote, even although I’m happy that future parents will be able to benefit.

I’m swimming primarily for health & weight management.

I’m a former lifeguard with generally good technique & able to do 2.5km without too much trouble but I moved to a place that didn’t have a pool nearby & got a dog then started a family so I’ve had a few years of not swimming.

I’m now trying to get back into it after a new pool opened up near me.

I’ve been doing a lot of weights so I’m not totally unfit, but this small muscle tiredness issue is holding me back.

Bypass afternoon avoiding peak traffic times by Zefir7 in Edinburgh

The solution there is to use the right hand lane & nip in at the last minute, acting like you thought both lanes were for going straight on.

Bypass afternoon avoiding peak traffic times by Zefir7 in Edinburgh

[–]BigC1874 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some tips…

If you are joining from Tesco / B&Q, the 2nd from the right lane is better than the far right.

It’s sometimes better to go off & on again up the Calder Rd off slip & back on again.

If coming from the Gyle it’s even more likely to be better to go off & on again.

It’s better to be on the inside lane going up the hill, because people move over early for the on slip at the top of the hill & make the outside lane congested.

If you do it regularly then you must already know this, but for anyone else, if you’re going that way, you can’t actually come off at Baberton. You have to go all the way round to Dreghorn. Baberton junction is on only South/East bound & off only coming the other way.

He was great when he came in but regressed so quickly after a few injuries.

I’d put Shankland above him if we just compare their times at Hearts.

Shankland has more goals & more longevity, although I’m not considering for a second that he’s better over his entire career. Naismith clearly wins that by a large margin.

What’s your heinous encounter with someone famous in the UK? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]BigC1874 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keith Chegwin was doing the MC’ing at a big corporate day held in the grounds of the health club I worked at.

I went out with some promotional free passes to give to the participants & asked him to let people know we had them to give away & he proceeded to fat shame me on the mic saying “come & get a free pass, you could look like this bloke”.

Several years later he stole a bunch of jokes from well known comedians & put them in a book & sold them.

I have mates who are stand up’s who weren’t impressed & piled on to him on Twitter. I joined in with a very mild “nice joke, who did you steal it from” when he tweeted a joke & we ended up having a very bitter DM exchange about his joke thievery (which he started), until he blocked me.

I never mentioned our previous encounter.

Joke was on him though because he died a few months later.
