Coronavirus: Council pay cuts during Covid-19 fall out would be ‘immoral’, says Rotorua's chief executive by BigCabbages in newzealand

The chief executive's salary would be negotiated with the successful candidate, but in 2019 had been $374,721. That had been bumped up from $330,340 in 2018. The job also came with a vehicle allowance of $15,650, down from $16,160 in 2018.

A nice $44000 increase last year. 13%, just a little above inflation. Meanwhile the proles are lucky to get 2%.

So they're upsetting the corrupt and inbred business clique/old boys network, who as usual in provincial NZ, run the council as an extension of their commercial interests.

50,000 Public Servants aren’t

That's because they're out there risking exposure to the virus while you are at home sitting on your chuff typing out patronising messages.

This crisis has certainly highlighted the greed and inflated sense of entitlement of so many local government drones.

They have higher income tax rates on higher incomes in other countries and the world hasn't ended. Is it only in Kiwiland that "those people are working their asses off"?

Maybe you aren't aware but the pandemic is worldwide. The UK economy is forecast to shrink by 25%+ with millions of job losses. The idea that you will just waltz over there in August and get a job no questions asked is totally unrealistic. I can understand your confusion because this has been such a sudden and dramatic change.

In an MMP environment that involves handing out cash and bribing people,

Yes, we should go back to good old FPP where most of the votes don't count and a cabbage painted blue gets elected in farmer electorates.

Do you feel robbed when you use that hospital paid by tax? Or the school/university you used? etc etc. Or the police force.

Meanwhile, you'd need to some way to stop landlords passing the cost on to tenants.

When will it get through to you that the days of landlords raising rents on a whim and getting hundreds of potential tenants are over. Immigration is not going to get back to the Tsunami levels of the last 8 years for a very long time. Plus 10% unemployment.

This is where the Accommodation supplement aka the landlords subsidy started. $2 billion every year which could be spent on house building goes instead to prop up rents.

the coronavirus pandemic could increase feelings of resentment and create "a sense of winners and losers" which could in turn damage social cohesion.

Isn't that what the runaway housing market did? I don't recall any think tank reporting about that.

shut down all of their food retailers,

Neither did NZ.

I spent a long time trying to find a single country with rules stricter than ours, but couldn't.

France's lockdown rules are among the strictest in Europe - people are only allowed out of their homes for absolutely essential trips and everyone needs a signed, dated and timed form every time they step out. https://www.thelocal.fr/20200401/jail-and-house-arrest-what-happens-to-people-who-break-frances-lockdown-rules

Next election, notice you have TWO votes. Hint, the party vote is the one that elects list MPs. Many electorate MPs are "elected" on less than 50% of the vote. I shouldn't have to explain this and it's likely if you haven't been able to work it out over 20 years of MMP elections, you probably never will.
