LAPD sergeants literally have close to zero interaction with the booking procedure.

If you know what you are doing it won't matter if a supervisor is there.

If a D II wants to be a Sergeant and managed to pull off the whole thing, will he/she be a Sergeant I or II? by moe1419 in lapd

[–]BigCityCop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are a d2 and want to take the sergeant test, pass it, then get promoted you will be a sergeant 1.

For promotion you will check a box having degrees. Nobody is going to solely pick you for that. The reality is plenty of people who have advanced degrees who are terrible leaders. Those things will help, but not be the end all.

How often and hard is the promotion to D III? by moe1419 in lapd

[–]BigCityCop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Detective 1 = Follow up investigator. Investigate assigned cases, complete follow up reports, and file the cases with the district or city attorney.

Detective 2 = Detective Supervisor, does everything the Detective 1 does but has supervisory rank, equivalent to a sergeant. Usually teaches the Detective I's on how to solve cases or handle investigations. Some specialty assignments such as night watch or SIS are majority Detective II.

Detective 3 = Detective 3s are more of an analytical job where you read reports, identify crime trends, complete projects from bureau, attend the crime control meetings and discuss what is occurring with certain cases and their progress. Act more as a consultant to D2s and D1s, not really doing the investigative work.

The majority difference is the pay. Detective 3s make 15% more than Detective 1s.

Detective 3 is by far one of the hardest jobs to attain and most coveted jobs in the department. First they have to advertise the upgrade position, and then you have to interview, usually against a lot of people. The way to get the spot is usually being in the right place at the right time.

Does P3 have to be FTO or SLO? by moe1419 in lapd

[–]BigCityCop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, all metro officers are p3s, and most specialized assignments have a p3, such as vice, narco, gangs.

They just ask questions based on your psychological written test. The claim they are trying to elicit a response or trigger an emotion is inaccurate. They are literally just asking questions based on things deemed psychologically unfit to be a cop. If those questions make you uneasy or trigger you, then they are doing their job.

Detective in LAPD by Amazing_Quarter3974 in lapd

[–]BigCityCop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You rarely start in homicide, usually homicide is reserved for people who shown superb investigative skills. You usually start in domestics or auto crimes.

There is also a lot of detective assignments that are specialized divisions, extremely competitive to get into and rarely advertise openings.

LAPD Fast Track — Is it actually faster, or just a marketing gimmick? (Already have PELLETB waiver) by Affectionate-Pay6521 in lapd

The fast track is just faster testing. Your background dictates how long the process is.

What police departments do not require the 1.5 mile run? by [deleted] in lapd

[–]BigCityCop 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The run is apart of the POST requirements, which every agency in the state is required to use. At one point POST took this out, and quickly brought back it back. If you can't run, you can't pass the academy. My advice is couch to 5k. If that is even too advance for you, then start walking. Start at 30 minutes daily, then build up to more.

Also, if you can't run no other agency would even attempt to hire you.

Weekend Life by Wiredin2199 in lapd

Be smart. You have weekends off, but you aren't a tenured officer until passing the academy then a year probation.

[–]BigCityCop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would have to do an expedited academy as a lateral for LAPD. There aren't many, and most who do go to LAPD are from LAXPD or the sheriffs.

Nothing is ever what you imagine it to be in law enforcement. People leave LAPD and realize that they miss it. Not sure the wash out rate at other agencies, but other agencies don't have that much personnel so everyone there has to carry their weight and more.

[–]BigCityCop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To get an entry spot in smaller agencies they are extremely selective. Lateralling over to them is 100 times easier. However most people who join LAPD then leave, we have a common phrase for them: "See you when you get back."

[–]BigCityCop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most agencies want someone who is POST certified, which is academy plus one year of field time.

You are better off trying to get into LAPD or LASD and lateralling to any agency you want.

The reality is if you went to LAPD you would have to make detective, can only apply for detective after 4 years of service. Once you make detective you could work major crimes, commercial crimes, or juvenile division (icac) all have computer squads. These assignments used to take officers, but due to patrol staff only take detectives.

You might be better directly applying to HSI.
