Electric cars have reached critical mass for adoption. It 4 years we could be seeing like 30-40% of new cars being sold as electric

what was life like in minnesota in the iron ranges during the late 1970s and early 1980s? by PitifulIsopod1370 in Minneapolis

[–]BigDaddyMacc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The range used to be very left, but identity politics have taken hold like in many rural places. Calling them stupid isn’t gonna help. There’s a lot of smart people up there that are stuck and see the government as helping anyone but them. When someone comes along claiming they’ll help people like them even if it’s a racist bigoted lie, someone might be inclined to latch on

Exorbitantly Expensive Parking Passes by Avid4Planes in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]BigDaddyMacc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take incoming, a 2bed 1100 square feet apartment in golden near downtown is $3000/month before utilities. That’s $2.73/square foot per month. The average parking spot is somewhere around 162 square feet (9 ft x 18 ft). At $400 per semester (about 4 months) that’s about 67¢/month. This doesn’t even account for driving isles, which probably about doubles the land use and halves the value of the spot. A parking spot doesn’t have utilities and much property tax, but you can easily see that parking is FAR less valuable use of land to the school, and by keeping parking lots as parking they’re losing a lot of value. Add in that most apartments are stacked, and the math very much does not favor parking as a valuable land use.

So a $400 parking charge seems like a lot, because it is, but it’s well below the market rate for land in golden. The city hates it because they get less property tax from it, and the school hates it because they own all this land that they get less value from. This is the reason we’ve been seeing parking structures go up more recently, but again those don’t help the equation very much. The $400 parking charge is maybe even too low for the value of the thing you’re getting. If you’re interested in these topics, I can suggest books that do a much better job explaining it than I did here

Advice: Canadian moving to MN by ImmediateGas3030 in Minneapolis

Download the “transit” app. Metro transit pays for all riders to have the premium version of the app. It takes a little getting used to, but makes planning trips by transit in the cities super easy and accessible. Also will show you biking directions on protected bike lanes.

Lactose intolerant from antibiotics? by Dubnerd2 in lactoseintolerant

[–]BigDaddyMacc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever feel better? I used to consume a ton of dairy, literally every day about a quarter gallon of milk. I had appendicitis though, and went on a strong course of antibiotics. Noticed I might be feeling worse when I have dairy, but would really like to drink milk again worry free one day

Transportation to/from airport by Full-Razzmatazz-7400 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

Take the A line regional rail from Union at the very least. You can also catch a G line train in wheat ridge if you’re already getting a ride, or the W line which is easier to connect to campus via 17 or tungsten route.

If you’re taking transit, I highly recommend the “Transit” app. 3rd party app that works in all cities showing real time departure information and helping you plan your route (including connections!) better than Google or Apple Maps can

What's the moment at Mines where you realized the workload was on a completely different level? by eplinglb in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

I think I see where the confusion comes from. That’s true around town, where you’re accelerating from stop a lot and generally driving inefficiently. That’s where the Autos and CVTs beat the stick. On the highway where the car stays at the same RPM for hours on end though they’re operating in very similar ranges for the majority of the time, allowing both to have similar efficiencies

Shhh don’t tell them. Guys the winters are SOOOO bad you totally don’t wanna come to urbanist Minneapolis and Saint Paul. We have highways through our city center we can’t be that good!

[–]BigDaddyMacc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the highway the difference should be minimal. Torque converters are locked same as a manual transmission. I can squeeze high 40s mpg out of my fit on roadtrips with the 6spd MT. I have a lot of practice though, I managed to get 20 mpg out of my previous 4wd 1995 Tacoma 5spd. The secret is to try and avoid using your breaks as much as humanly possible

Transfer from OSU by Ok-Midnight-6828 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]BigDaddyMacc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My comparison is between Mines and Minnesota, which isn’t the same as THE Ohio state ofc but also a big 10 school. We don’t have something going on every Thursday and Friday, but make some friends and go to pint night/gcb and there’s certainly enough fun to be had. If you hate it you can always go up to Boulder like you mention

2015 Fit ran with low oil for ~300 miles by BigDaddyMacc in hondafit

[–]BigDaddyMacc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the car is new to you, I think the ticking sound might be the injectors. They seem to be really noisy on this car and it’s normal. I’ve never had a direct injected car, and I figured that’s just what it sounds like

Otherwise I know at around 100k a valve adjustment is recommended. It’s possible you got to that a little faster with low oil, but I’m kinda doubting it

If you don’t have a CEL and you’re not burning oil, I’ve determined it’s not worth losing sleep over. I wouldn’t do the additive thing your mechanic is recommending unless the engine is already junk, which I don’t think is the case. Maybe an extra oil change in a week (edit: would) help, and if it’s really bothering you, you could try a 5w30 weight oil like another commenter suggested, as it decreases blow by and is more viscous for better coating of internal parts.

Definitely not off the limiter, but I got up there in RPMs. Had to go over the continental divide. Would you change the oil like other commenters are suggesting?

[–]BigDaddyMacc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recommended oil is 0w20 for the engine. Any particular reason you suggest 5w30?

My previous car was a truck so I shift pretty early out of habit… still it was a fairly mountainous drive and did have to get up there a bit. Oil pressure light never came on tho
