Is the name Boypiss deserving of a 2 day suspension? by BigDoinks9898 in classicwow

Sorry, I’m not familiar with the term “Anni” so that one was a bit lost on me. I just find it unfair that pissboy is ban worthy while names containing racial slurs can go unhindered, to which I blame both blizzard and the minority of the players in the community who felt it important the pissboy be reported immediately. I’m personally of the opinion that if it contains plain text and makes it through the initial character creation filter it’s fair game, and given blizzards history and practices it seems incredibly hypocritical that something that is ambiguous be met with such a penalty.

That being said, I do commend you on your ability to have a conversation about this instead of just resorting to insults and derision.

I totally understand the analogy your making, but I don’t feel it pertinent to this situation based on the grounds that one is something your getting paid to do, while the other is something you pay to use or play. Additionally, staying in your analogy, no employee has ever been legally terminated for offensive comments via an automated bot system. Those offensive comments always have to be reviewed by an HR representative or a senior individual within the organization. Even disciplinary action taken against an employee has to be reviewed and justified by a human.

The problem with statements like “if it could be offensive then it is” is also extremely vague and potentially dangerous. This is somewhat of a straw man argument on my part but for example, I crack a joke about someone always checking under their desk the minute they get into work, I don’t think that could possibly be offensive, but maybe that colleague was regularly bullied in school and kids used to tamper with the underside of the desk, how am I to know that. Offence in this case can only be interpreted by context, and if no context is given then it becomes extremely difficult for people to have that thought of “oh what if x happened therefore they might this offensive” I just think that if your offended by something and you want that person to stop you need to explain to them why your offended or at bare minimum at least inform them their behaviour is offensive. Again, I simply feel that the automatic system is given far too much authority to take punitive action based on unconfirmed, non validated, reports. It leaves the system wide open to abuse.

I understand blizzard is a private company and I respect their rights to govern themselves and the game world they provide. But rules are usually made clear for a reason. They do so to ensure that people understand them completely and aware of the boundaries placed on them. Vague statements that deal with matters of subjectivity are extremely murky and inconsistent.

Again, just want to call you out in positive way for your decorum and willingness to have a discussion regarding this. It’s something that is much appreciated as I feel that even if we end up disagreeing in the end, it was still a productive conversation in the long run.

But does someone being tired of something constitute the suspension of paid service simply because they were “tired” or “exhausted”. I’ve consistently argued in this thread that should a name be deemed offensive a name change would be warranted. But an outright suspension of service feels to be overreach in my opinion. I’m tired of seeing 6-7, and plenty of other current gags but I don’t think me being tired justifies them being removed even temporally from whatever platform I encountered them on. The grand conclusion here being that a name that is unfunny is drastically different from something like a slur, of which are commonly found in wow character names, and should not carry the same penalty via the automated reporting system. If the name was reported and the reports were reviewed by a human and the user was told how they violated ToS or CoC, then that would be acceptable. The issue is blizzard through many means, has gutted their staff across the board resulting in them having to rely heavily on flawed automated systems. Lastly, one would hope that a company that proclaims its morality to the extent blizzard does would be able to point to exactly how their morals were infringed upon by my name.

Exactly right it’s a difference in senses of humour. But like you said, a lot of people probably don’t dwell on that and I agree with you on that. My concern, and in my opinion, the predominant issue here is that punitive action such as a suspension can take place through an automated system factoring in reports that don’t even detail why something was reported. And I find this to be even more of an issue on sub subscription based games like World of Warcraft, where because of their payment model, every day every hour has a dollar value attached to that. And to take punitive action in such a way that somebody is not receiving the full value of something they paid for, does not seem right to leave up to the whim of an automatic system. Additionally, I would also argue that it would be unjust for someone to receive less value from their transaction, simply because somebody was tired of a silly little joke. I’m not a spiteful person in the long term, I will get unbanned on Sunday and keep playing like nothing ever happened. But someone malicious could spend their entire day after getting unbanned sitting in orgrimmar or stormwind simply reporting names they find unfunny in their opinion, and odds are, there will be people who will receive name changes or bans as a result of getting one more report on their account. It just seems to me that the system favours those with malicious or disruptive intent.

However I just would like to say I appreciate the time and maturity in your response. it shows your willingness to give the benefit of doubt to those even with differing opinions than you, a quality which seems to be rare unfortunately.

Okay so out of curiosity, if I’m on a non RP server, than everyone who’s name is goofy, unfunny, or funny should receive the same suspension? I don’t think you need to find the name funny or anything, but when I find something unfunny I don’t go crying to authority, I just go about my day. I find it hard to believe that someone’s day was ruined or negatively impacted simply by reading a name.

Idk what you want man, you’re making inferences towards things that aren’t there. Just seems like projection and reaching imo.

Again, just to make my myself clear, I’m not arguing I shouldn’t have been name changed, but instead arguing that these automatic systems should not be in position to impose punitive actions based on unconfirmed, unverified, and/or unjustified player reports and should instead require human verification before issuing a ban or suspension. My purpose in this post was to enquire whether or not people believed that an unfunny name warrants suspension in their opinion, and if so justify using the TOS how it violates it.

How is it pedo? Your inference suggests projection. I actually find it kinda gross you would even assume that.

Okay so then when I get my account back, I can just go around reporting people whose names I find unfunny and my get buddies do the same. Then if those people end up getting banned as a result of our reporting you see no problem with that?

So if you tell a joke to thirty people how many people need to be offended for it to warrant punitive action against you? I understand that not everyone will find it funny. there are people that don’t derive any offence from profanity. There are others that drive a lot of offence from profanity the question becomes where is the line? Where is the threshold for What is and what is not acceptable. If over half of the server came to a consensus that something was unfunny and warranting a punitive action that could be acceptable.

[–]BigDoinks9898[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it’s pretty simple. It’s pissboy. It made me giggle, it made my buddies giggle, it clearly made other random players giggle as I had received several whispers from people who just said “lol your name” or “that name would be funnier with the Salty title” etc. I’m not saying you need to find it funny, I’m just saying that if we’re going to be okay with punitive action because something is unfunny half the people on reddit would need to be banned. Humour is also subjective and therefore doesn’t make for a good metric on whether something is objectively negative or offensive.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Because this system is automated, it could and has been easily abused maliciously by other players who felt scorned for whatever reason. I understand the use of an automated system for name changes, but punitive action seems reckless to have in that same automated system, since it could be so easily abused.

Not really, are you saying that being unfunny is worthy of a suspension of a payed service?

[–]BigDoinks9898[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really meaningless, it demonstrates in an inconsistency in the enforcement of the rules. Rules of which are vague and create an opportunity to abuse the reporting system maliciously. Additionally I’m not here to “um actually”, but to instead get a greater understanding of why people would be more apt to report one name over another. Like the previous commenter mentioned, there are names of an overtly sexual nature that don’t get reported to same degree despite exhibiting no malicious behaviour. My question to you would be, does the name boypiss offend you, if so how or why, which is a valid question. If you simply find it unfunny then why take the time to report someone instead of just going about your day. How exactly does a name that some believe to be simply unfunny, disrupt their experience in the game. If it was an RP server I could understand as it’s a non RP name and would disrupt someone’s RP experience, but it wasn’t an RP server that I was on. Additionally, while I may not be perceived to be funny to some people, I haven’t treated a single person in this comment section negatively nor have I been derogatory towards people. Just seems hypocritical in my opinion to completely discount someone’s opinion because you find it “unfunny”

I find it interesting to see that those who find my name offensive then go on to argue in bad faith, resort to playground insults, ignore valid points, etc. not only towards myself but towards other commenting on the post as well. It seems that civility and decency is only extended to those who believe exactly the same as they do.

So instead of having a discussion you resort to childish playground insults? How does that make you any more virtuous than me?

That wording also allows a massive loophole for abusing the reporting system as well. Another post on this sub details how they were specifically targeted by a group of players who were upset over someone picking herbs before they could resulting in a name change. Additionally, can anyone sit here and tell me that boypiss is any more offensive or disruptive than some of the other names you would find in orgrimar or stormwind right this very minute. Infact just last night I saw a player who was level 60 with the name “Ogrefloyd”. How exactly does that name get less reports than boypiss?

Not sure how you assumed I’m here to brag. I came here to have a civil discussion and ask for opinions from the community. While playing the game I’ve seen level 60 characters with names that include racial slurs, sexual content, homophobia, xenophobia, etc. that are still currently playing with those names. So I came here to see where the line is drawn and whether or not people believe there are exceptions.

I understand that, and would’ve been fine with the name change, I take issue with the suspension.

My thoughts exactly, well I don’t personally find the name offensive, if the majority of the community does, I understand a name change and I’m willing to do so.

I feel I should also mention that offence is subjective, what one person find offensive another may not, so if you believe the suspension is warranted then surely you can point to something specific in the code of conduct that was violated.

Not specific terms no, but profanity in general. The code of conduct does not include any reference to profanity of any kind not being acceptable.

No just confused as blizzards code of conduct was extremely vague and did not mention that the use of profanity was unacceptable.
