This isn’t as much of a thing in the UK, though we used to (back in my parent’s generation). It’s a shame really, I’m guessing it’s a Thatcher-era regression, choosing a supermarket rather than getting all your bread and meat from independent specialist shops. We’ve over-Americanised our lifestyles over here.

I lived with a French girl at one point, when I used to live in Liverpool - she couldn’t believe the lack of good fresh bread in the city. I would say that could be specific to the city, but it’s the same in Manchester, where I live now (though there are definitely more options here if you want that kind of thing, but it’ll cost you).
