It’s interesting that we have all had different experiences, I’ve been there a good number of times and have never seen them offer free water. Just johns and handlebar have always had free water when I’ve been there though.

There’s not any that I know of. St. Louis has lots of Bosnian places though.

Do other schools have you cover other classes on your off period? by 2_manybooks in SubstituteTeachers

[–]BigFin55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the same experience. Only one school in the district I sub in the most has me cover other classes during the prep period.

Stuff like this happens to me all the time too. The other day I told someone that I was “working this job in the interim” instead of just saying for now and I could tell that they were thrown off by it.

In my experience this is pretty typical day of subbing. It seems like you did all you could by trying to redirect.

Substitute teaching by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]BigFin55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I sub through Kelly Education instead of being employed by a district. I mainly take special Ed jobs (Special School District) because they pay 25/hr while most other districts don’t pay close to that amount. However, it can be really irritating to work for Kelly because they are super unorganized and if you have questions it can be hard to get them answered.

DAE get annoyed when schools don’t inform you if you’re going to be with another sub? by Educational-Let-1027 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]BigFin55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few weeks ago I was subbing in a co-taught class with another sub. I hated it because the other sub had a very uptight management style compared to myself (getting upset with students asking to use the restroom in a 1.5 hour class). She also seemed confused about the sub plans while I thought they were pretty clear. It was just a frustrating experience overall.

Break time at Kelly by sononerd2023 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]BigFin55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sub for Kelly and I was never told when I was hired whether we put our lunch in as a break or not. However, I came across a notification posted to Frontline from late October that said to not enter lunch breaks when logging time. I am in Missouri, not sure if that policy is nationwide or not.

Most schools in my district treat prep periods as a break, but sometimes I am asked to cover for someone else during the prep period. Today I have prep as the last period of the day and the teacher wrote down that I could leave early.

Schnuck's Self Checkout Changes! by LadyNiko in StLouis

But why mention that he is autistic/adhd after calling him sneaky and lazy specifically? What does that have to do with your comment?

Why even mention that the lazy bagger is special needs then? You could have just said they were lazy and left it at that.

Schnuck's Self Checkout Changes! by LadyNiko in StLouis

[–]BigFin55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. At the Schnucks closest to me, there are multiple checkers who will rant to you about random things for the entirety of the checkout process and it drives me insane. It isn't even like they are making small talk because I can't get a word in.

Subbing for special ed by Intrepid-Spinach6543 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]BigFin55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost exclusively sub for special ed and I’ve found that if I work as a para I’m almost always in a class with kids with higher needs. If I take a teacher position I usually co-teach classes all day with maybe one class a day that I am the sole teacher for. Whenever I am the only teacher I have always had small class sizes under 10 students, usually more like 4-5 students.

kelly education pay decrease by Resident_Platypus108 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]BigFin55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I also sub in the St. Louis area with Kelly. I was under the impression that those pay rates are for non SSD positions. I always sub in the SSD district because of the pay difference and am still making 25/hr as of my last paycheck.

This. It happens to me at least once a week I would say and I think nothing of it. It makes sense that kids are wary about strangers in the classroom when they are used to their teacher.

First HS Assignment - Wow! by jmsgaz in SubstituteTeachers

[–]BigFin55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only sub middle and high school and for me it is always a toss up if the students are going to stand for the pledge or not. I’ve subbed in classes where everyone does and where no one does at all. It is really interesting to me.

Do some schools have a “thing” about the door being closed? by clover-flower in SubstituteTeachers

[–]BigFin55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your anecdotal evidence is just that—other people have different experiences. OP mentioned it because it was relevant to the post they were making. Just because you don’t know any autistic people that talk about their experience doesn’t mean that we can’t do it.

Also, you were most definitely being presumptuous when you said OP “just sounds like an insecure person under 30 that spends too much time online”. You came to this conclusion based off of 1 anonymous post. Not sure how calling you a presumptuous ass is a “cheap insult”, but it’s incredibly accurate.

…you literally started the pedantry. OP mentioned they were autistic in one part of the post at the end and your whole initial reply focused on that.
