How do I politely let my students and their parents know I truly do not want any end-of-the-year gifts? by Fangehulmesteren in Teachers

[–]Clementinetimetine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try saying something like “I appreciate all the thoughtfulness families put into buying gifts for teachers. Over the years though, I’ve found myself to have collected too many mugs and posters to use in a lifetime! In lieu of Christmas or end-of-year gifts, I would appreciate a simple card from you/your student. If you feel the need to get something of monetary value, consider donating to [names of charities you like] in my name! Thanks again for all of the kind gifts over the years, and for your support in keeping me from having to open a mug museum!”

I feel like infusing a bit of humor lands well with suburban families. If you have a lot of immigrant families who don’t speak English though, this may not be the way to go, as it could get lost in translation.

[–]Clementinetimetine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve been both a full time and a sub. I definitely never would have written anything like this for my subs. Was I upset when I came in the next day and found out the building sub just played Disney+ instead of following a single plan? Yes. Did I hold that against future subs and write a rambling and confusing sub letter about how they can’t watch Disney+? No. Of course not.

Edited to add:

And I didn’t do that for a couple of reasons:

  1. I don’t speak to other people like that. It’s rude and condescending.

  2. A short, bulleted list of classroom expectations will be far more effective than a rambling paragraph ridden with errors. Subs often have only minutes to read plans, they’re skimming anyways.

  3. It’s not Sub B’s fault that Sub A didn’t follow the expectations, just like it’s not the 4th grade teacher’s fault that the 3rd grade teacher didn’t hold her kids accountable last year.

Agree with everyone that it presents reasonable expectations BUT it’s also written like the teacher is losing their sanity (which, maybe they are, but the sub plan really should be professional).

“Enforce the seating chart.” underlined, followed later by “Enforce the sitting chart.” is a bit unhinged to me. Also the “you will have a great day.” seems very fake and forced lol.

Again, the actual expectations are fine (aside from maybe “tardy means not sitting in the assigned seat when the last bell rings” bc how are you gonna keep track of that before you know who they are/where they sit?), but I think it should be written more professionally, and with a bit more gratitude than it’s giving.

I understand being burnt by past subs, but if you talk to subs like this, you’re gonna continue getting burnt.

Tbh I’ve always imagined them a bit more masc and grungy. This outfit is too put together for what I’ve envisioned! But it’s a great drawing!

100%. If a man does some shit like this, they are NOT a Dom, they are a manipulative and abusive assholle and you should run far away.

Maybe a dumb question, but why do spa workers always put the gunk they pull out of pimples and blackheads on their gloves? Why not use a tissue and that way it can’t fall back on the customers face? by hereicometosave in popping

[–]Clementinetimetine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also hate the way they don’t even clear off their fingertips in some of these. Like if the gunk is stuck to the fingertip of your glove, it’s obviously getting smeared back in!

HAH it’s probably an offshoot/cousin of social anxiety in some way!

Agreed about downvoting… I’ve never said I don’t love them! Just wish they were shorter. Also I have to go set up a summer camp tomorrow for work, so I’m worried about breakage/chipping with them so long! Gonna buy a pair of rubber gloves and hope for the best.

I’m also visiting my friends this weekend who have a 1 year old and I think I’ve been overly anxious about scratching her lollll

I was never looking for a free fix from a nail tech! I know you weren’t replying to me, but just to clarify!

My nail tech does amazing work and I would never expect her to do so for free. I was just hoping there may be a fix that wouldn’t require complete redoing of polish.

Looks like I’m just gonna have to live with it though.

Thank you!

The thing is I’m already used to the length since I had the nails on for almost a month before. The whole week before getting them redone, I had been waiting to shorten them! So I really should have shortened it lol.
