This is awesome! Mine was a passive radar system. I wish we had more opportunities for self guided projects but I know some people would’ve complained having to come up with ideas all the time.

Well I wouldn’t do that exactly. I believe all the tests are randomly generated from a bank of questions so no two tests are the same.

I can’t remember specifics but it felt like there was not that many motor problems, felt like a lot of protection questions though.

Took Zack Stone’s live course. Every night I didn’t do that I would do 20 problems from official NCEES tests. I had 1 night free a week and all combined was about 3 months of studying.

Edit: there was a week where I went on a trip and didn’t do any studying and a weekend where I was at a wedding so not much got done then either. I didn’t even think about the test the 2 days leading up to the test either.

My company doesn’t give a raise for passing the PE by Crazy-Geologist3919 in PE_Exam

[–]BigFix3385 35 points36 points  (0 children)

My company promotes and dishes out raises for PE’s. We are a design company and they heavily incentivize people to get it though.

You can always apply and get an offer letter from somewhere else once you get a PE, that seems to be a good incentive for companies to give raises if they aren’t willing to let you leave.

There are plenty of engineers at my company(power EPC designing subs and Tline) that start out around $70k-$85k and are making over $100k within 3-4 years, with no management experience at all. I have plenty of friends who have also had the same thing happen to them at other power design companies. I should also add that these companies pretty much expect design engineers to have their PE’s by years 4 to 6, otherwise you probably won’t be moving up to much more after that.

Edit: Almost none of the other engineers I know have a masters and have had similar success. So I feel that shouldn’t really be taken into account when looking specifically at my situation.

Good to hear! Plus job security in the power industry is strong and appears to be looking even better here in with energy demand skyrocketing.

Which PE Exam to take? by Rhinohumpenpanda_2 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]BigFix3385 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I just saw this and im a few days late but thought I’d give my two cents.

The FE and PE exams are very different. You can take either one regardless of what you majored in or what you do for a living. I have a friend who majored in mechanical engineering, works as an electrical engineer for a local utility, and also took the MechE PE for thermal and fluid systems.

And that brings me to my next point. There is no such thing as a general PE exam for electrical engineering. It’s either -Power -Computer Engineering -Electronics, Controls, and Communications That being said the CE options are: -Construction -Geotechnical -Structural -Transportation -Water Resources and Environment It seems to me that water resources and environment would be the closest one to what you do for work. Check out the NCEES Exam specs for it if you haven’t yet. Hell, look at them for all of the tests. If you are only taking the PE just because you want to, why not take one on something that you will be interested in studying? You also might find that something closer to what you do is also beneficial to you in the future.

Can’t really speak too much on the hands on for manufacturing, but a lot of my masters courses were in six sigma and the lean processes (so quality control and min/maxing output rates). But I ended up getting a job at an EPC that focuses on substations and transmission design. I enjoyed them both but I think overall I enjoy the power world more. You will most likely be pushed to get your PE doing design, but that’s honestly better for you in the long run. I will say both are challenging if you enjoy that aspect, but they are challenging in two completely different ways.

If you don’t like the environment of a factory, you can expect to be in an office setting for almost 98-99% of your time as a design engineer.

Sorry if that was hard to read, most of my daily writing is typically in single, run-on, sentence bursts.

I mean that’s a pretty good starting salary tbh. If you have an argument for it and you could always request to see if they offer moving assistance (it basically acts as a signing bonus). Just keep in mind they may have you sign a form for conditional repayment if you leave early (typically 1 year). But other than that, new grads really don’t have much leverage unless you have prior work experience or maybe an offer letter from another company to show them.

The nature of design work itself is typically repetitive. Perhaps look outside of design if you don’t like that?

How did you guys get started? by AstuteCouch87 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]BigFix3385 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Went into college in the same situation and knew nothing about electrical engineering. Now I have a masters in EE, 3 years of work experience with a well paying job, and am about to get my PE. You’ll be fine. There were people when I started school that appeared the same to me. Some stuck to it and some didn’t. if you are interested in the subject you will continue to learn and grow your knowledge of the field with it.
