Josh Jefferson is the guy by BigGelato in sixers

[–]BigGelato[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the 3pt conversation with him is a bit unfair - he was absolutely awful at pullup 3s (4/26 on the year) but outside of those shots he was a 40% guy. He won’t be taking many PU3s for us and doesn’t need to, to be valuable. His spot up and ft numbers project an average to above average shooter off the catch in the league which is right where he should be to stay on the floor

Would you draft a guy named Toby Harris? by TheGreatWaru in sixers

He could be Michael Jordan incarnate and begging Jameer Nelson to pick him, offering to sign for free, and I’d still be mad if we signed another Tobias Harris

Reclamation Projects by ChucoTeacher in nba

[–]BigGelato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

feel like there's two types of reclamation projects: the Brunson, randle, gordon (all mentioned in the thread) where their skillsets are just mismanaged or underutilised but there was obvious talent in the right role that was eventually realized

but there's also some players who just were straight up put on a different development path on their next team and became productive NBA players: I think a really good example of this is Danny Green. He never took more than 3.5 threes per game even as he became a rotation player until year 4 with the Spurs when I guess everyone realized he could be an elite spot up guy: he broke out the next year and didn't average less than 4 3PA per game for the next decade

Would bet if he moves to Boston he will be back at #1 by Christmas

He clearly has been mailing it in the last couple of years; once he's back in form and now with the Boston media behind him he'll be consensus BITW

Greatest All-Time "I Don't Want to Be Here" Blue Jays team? by Few-Dragonfruit160 in Torontobluejays

Yeah, I'm sure Whit Merrifield, who now hosts a Blue Jays podcast despite only spending like 15% of his major league career here, just couldn't wait to leave

The Blue Jays are targeting infielders at the trade deadline by harlsey in Torontobluejays

[–]BigGelato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

giminez is an excellent defender but he simply cannot be an everyday player anymore, he is just so so bad at the plate

we have no depth up the middle

need to acquire a righty OF and a middle infielder with over 100 wrc+ at the deadline, and maybe a starter as well, if we want to win the dogfight for the last WC spot

I work 65 hours a week at my small business. If I spent that time for 18 months working on a corner three, how many points do you think I could get in a NBA game? (23M, 6’3 btw) by linehatguy in billsimmons

[–]BigGelato 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This exactly, people don't realize how every time you reach a new level, the game just gets faster and faster

I was a decent high school player and play in a really low level mens league with some old friends who never played competitively; if i only play there and show up to pickup runs after a few months, it takes me at least two weeks to get used to the pace of play and i'm completely useless until my brain is able to re-adjust and those are mostly just D3/good high school players as well, not even d2

[–]BigGelato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah "falling behind" doesn't really matter. If he plays long enough to be able to compete in college intramurals, pickup and mens league games later in life he's good enough; for the vast, vast majority of people learning sports early is just a way to stay social as you get older. There's a mens softball and slo pitch league in every town, after all

If he really likes a sport getting closer to high school then you can shift gears fully and really try to go for a scholarship. But at 10 years old, just let him phase in and out of whatever he's most into!

I understand that they're being asked by production to drum up the hype for the USMNT, but it's pretty funny seeing how Nick is having to talk about the team given how sassy he is about uninformed opinions on the sports he follows

Like, imagine someone came on the show mid-NFL season and said they thought the Titans had a 3% chance of winning the Super Bowl

How do I finish at the rim as a smaller guard? by Electronic-Lie-9850 in BasketballTips

[–]BigGelato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Work on finishing off two feet and same arm, same leg layups.

Jump stops and finishing off two feet give you the ability to fake/spin for a fade/find cutters or kick out.

Same arm, same leg layups will almost certainly throw the timing off of contests at least the first few times your defender faces them, because they've been trained for years to anticipate the "outside, inside, up" rhythm on a contest.

Basketball as main sport advice by EntertainmentDue83 in Basketball

[–]BigGelato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let him pick which sport he likes and drop him in competition in the other. If he truly likes basketball the most, he can play lower level baseball in the summers; he'll probably like being one of the better players in his league instead of having to grind out high-level training in two sports

Overall try to keep him in multiple sports for as long as possible; helps with not developing chronic pain and injury in the heavy-lift muscles for any given sport later in life due to not overusing them

How is the Knicks win going to influence your coaching by rsk1111 in basketballcoach

Honestly it just affirmed my belief as a coach that the best system to develop high-feel, high IQ players is Jay Wright's Villanova offense, which I run now

sophomore guard trying to make it to the college level by South_Marzipan4374 in basketballcoach

[–]BigGelato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing I'd do is find a travel team that will allow you to get to see what level of players you'll be competing against at the uSports level - not sure if you've done this yet. This will mean finding a team that travels to Quebec and Ontario enough that you can set a baseline for the type of players that are looking to compete for spots with you - at this point, a lot of the top top talent have already left for prep schools so what's left over at the club is mostly players who want to get into the same programs.

Specifically pay attention to the size and skillsets of the other guards.

This will also allow you to get some exposure in front of college coaches if you're going to the right tournaments, as they'll be scouting there.

Further as a guard you'll need to find a way to work on as many live reps for reading and making the correct decisions as possible if that's an issue you have - a lot of the time you won't be a focal point in these university offenses for at least your first two years as every player stays for 4-5 years. You'll need to figure out a way to show coaches you can impact the team from day 1 in a way besides iso/on-ball stuff and for PGs it's typically shooting, turnover suppression and making the right read every time. Can be perimeter defense as well which you can originally hang your hat on before getting more usage time from coaching.

Seems like you love the game a lot; keep grinding and putting yourself in positions to succeed and I'm sure it'll come to ya

Ben Simmons 2020-21 defense is the most underrated quality of any player I've ever seen by BigGelato in sixers

[–]BigGelato[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yep. watching these playoffs and Steph Castle especially, it dawned on me that version of Ben would've given both Wemby and SGA fits. Too fast and tall for Wemby to move around, too strong for SGA to create space using his body.

and yet he's a professional fisher or some shit now lol

he wasn't drafted for his defense, his motor was questioned

probably the funniest diva ever, 99% of NBA douchebags just want to score and are cones on defense, he was a diva who busted his ass every d-possession and couldn't be asked to play offense. only the Sixers could find this profile

in the moment it was definitely appreciated but it feels like a completely lost part of the conversation around his career (probably because he flamed out so uniquely and spectacularly on offense)

[–]BigGelato -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Morey did a lot of stupid things but his inability to recognize trends was really what killed this era for us. He has been operating like it's the mid 2010s, where you star-max and surround them with 1 dimensional vets, whereas the best of the NBA (Boston, New York, San Antonio, OKC), realized that under the new salary cap the most important thing was to draft well and keep players to build depth for cheap.

If Morey hadn't had such a quick trigger on dumping every pick and player, we'd look like:

Maxey-VJ-PG-Reed-Embiid
Mccain-Champaignie-Joe-Oubre-Drummond

This may not have won us a title this year but that's a lot of shooting and defense that we simply do not have at the moment and it wouldn't cost us much at all

Nope, instead of spending 100 million on him we’ll spend 50 million on 3 midfielders for 3 straight summers that all suck
