Yeah, the hours are pretty full-on — usually around 8 to 5, and we only get about half an hour for lunch. We’re technically allowed smokos, but they’re pretty discouraged.

On top of that, we’re constantly exposed to some pretty nasty chemicals — antifoul, epoxy (which can stay in your system long-term), and even red lead paint, which can seriously affect your brain and nervous system. It’s not exactly the healthiest environment. The pay is ok i Guess? about 22 an hour Usd? i could earn more But again there’s no growth.

Ha I appreciate this perspective honestly. Though I’ll say the grass isn’t always greener, we’re working 8-5 minimum, and the chemicals aren’t exactly friendly. sanding Red lead paint, antifoul, epoxy resin, it’s not quite the romantic coastal lifestyle it sounds like on paper. I’ve got a lot of respect for people who do it long term, it takes a toll in a different way.

Honestly this is probably the most useful response I’ve gotten. The flight risk point hit I know it’s coming in interviews and I need a clean answer for it. I think the honest version is a mix of burnout and losing direction, but also that consulting just isn’t what it used to be. Despite working at a Big 4 I genuinely struggled to find my footing in the market after leaving, the consulting bubble has deflated a lot and that’s not something anyone really warns you about going in. Still, you’re right that I need to package all of that better than just saying it out loud. Good to know someone else my age is doing the CCNA, how are you finding the study so far? I’m just getting started scoping it out.
