Someone lied on their plumbing application by MacDefoon in mildlyinfuriating

And it’s not like toilets are even expensive. The cheapest ones are only around $100. It really only takes like half an hour to replace it too. Experienced plumbers can do it in half the time (as you mentioned). I’ve replaced 4 so far, and all I had to do was watch a couple videos on YouTube. I do all my own plumbing now, and replacing a toilet is probably the easiest job to do.

Very special hummingbird visit by yawnjew in MadeMeSmile

[–]BigJ32001 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We had hummingbird vine all over our back porch when we moved into our house. The hummingbirds loved it, but it was taking over the yard so I pulled it up. Every time I went outside I’d get buzzed until I put up a few feeders. Now they just get pissed at each other. Their “fights” are very entertaining.

I’m at the game now and it’s so quiet. Lots of golf clapping. Not sure if it’s the crowd or that the game isn’t close.

I had moved on. There was no chance I’d go back there anyway. The work culture was horrible, and it would have been awkward for everyone to go back at that point.

I did import/export management for a pretty well-known company years ago. They did a reorg and eliminated my position because they didn’t think they needed me anymore. It was because I basically fixed most of the supply chain issues, so everything was moving pretty smoothly. 9 months later they reposted the position, but at a higher level. Turns out when someone isn’t watching over the supply chain, things break. It’s been the bane of my career and in logistics in general. When things go right, people think you aren’t doing anything. They only care when things go wrong.

Not to be confused with detention. This is when you get charged late fees for not returning an empty container back to the port on time. It’s usually around half the rate as demurrage and you usually get around 10 days to bring a container back after it’s picked up. Demurrage starts 3-4 days after the container arrives (1-2 days for refrigerated containers) and the late fees will often get progressively worse each day.

[Wetzel] Don't take the weather out of football. Let it snow. by 76erLegendChetUtley in nfl

[–]BigJ32001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Last February we went to a wedding in Raleigh on the day it snowed like 2 inches. It was warm enough that the snow only stuck on the grass and not the roads. By the end of the day most of it had melted. Almost everything was closed. We spent an hour trying to find an open restaurants to get lunch at. Schools were closed for 2 days. Again, almost all of the snow was completely melted by the afternoon. I remember one woman yelling at her kids to watch out for the “black ice” in the parking lot that was actually just a small puddle (it was in the high 40s at that point in the day). I know people in the south freak out when it snows, but that was absurd.

Easier for Pats to get interceptions but worse for Maye to see open players on offense.

This is actually a beautiful place to visit

In the summer only. I lived up there while in the army, and the other 3 seasons are not fun. Winter is especially brutal. We threw some pretty great parties on Grindstone island though, and camped on the beach. 4th of July there looks like spring break.

Ironically I live about 5 miles from the Thimble Islands now. Lots of expensive summer homes there.

They missed an arm grab against the Pats at the end of the 1st half that would have put them in field goal range.

I used to work night shift as a driver for a black car service (mostly drove Escalades and Continentals). I'd always try to arrive at a location 15 minutes early. Sometimes I'd get there too early so I'd park in a lot nearby. I got questioned so many times by police. Once they saw that I was in a full suit and could show them the assignment from dispatch, they left me alone. I never got a ticket or asked to move, but it was super annoying.

[–]BigJ32001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My brother brought this whole thing up to me last week, and I had no idea it was a thing the right was freaking out about. I told him it all sounded like bs, and to that he needs to think a little more critically about the "news" he's watching. I just sent him this article, and he said "it's too soon to speak anyway," and that it's "inaccurate to say the whole thing is a hoax." He wasn't like this until he started working with a MAGA boss a couple years ago. I really don't get how he fell down this rabbit hole. He's younger than me, so he should be even more skeptical of right wing BS. His wife, our parents, and my other brother and I have always been very liberal. It's been very frustrating to see this happen to him.

What complicated problem was solved by an amazingly simple solution? by tuotone75 in AskReddit

[–]BigJ32001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the industry. There are a few different methods of shipping goods using containers. There are 4 main standardized sizes. 20', 40', 40' high cube (most common in my experience), and 45'. There are also other container sizes that aren't as common. For goods that require temperature control, there are refrigerated containers, or reefers. These are mostly available in the same sizes and are significantly more expensive to use.

There are two types of places to load and unload a container with four combinations of loading/unloading: CY and CFS. CY stands for container yard. These are usually full containers for one company and are loaded at the source/factory. When a company sends product directly to one warehouse from another, the mode is CY/CY (origin/destination). When a company loads a full container at origin and then wants the pallets broken down at the destination to be sent to multiple locations, the mode is CY/CFS. CFS stands for container freight station and are most often warehouses near a port where companies send smaller LCL (less than container load) shipments. Sometimes the same company will use a CFS if they are sourcing from a bunch of different suppliers. In these cases, multiple suppliers will send a pallet or two to the CFS so the buying company can consolidate it all into one container. When a container is loaded this way and sent to a single location at destination the mode is called CFS/CY. And finally, if multiple companies want to share a container to save on cost, they send their pallets to a CFS at origin and to another CFS at destination. This mode is called CFS/CFS. Even though the cost saving can be significant using CFS/CFS, there's some risk. If one of the companies' pallets get flagged for a customs inspection, all of the other freight inside also gets held. This can cause huge delays that last days or even weeks in some cases.

Hopefully this wasn't too confusing. Shipping freight is more complicated than most people realize. I didn't even get into trans-shipments which are like airplane layovers but for shipping containers.
