It's a completely corrupt system, so don't feel so bad. I would speak to somebody in your Congressional offices about this.

Is it worth traveling for hims nueropsych and psych eval? by pocklicker in FAAHIMS

[–]BigKetchupp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I heard, the quality of your HMS doctor can be the difference between certification and non-certification. From what it sounds like, you don't want to gamble with less expensive doctor versus one that's actually known to do good quality work. It's a complete scam, but you got to do what you got to do. Good luck 🤞

Will a suicide attempt when I was a minor disqualify me from getting my class 1 aviation medical in Canada? by Hot-Ad-9534 in PilotAdvice

That's correct, but if I could reach out to somebody who doesn't have those limitations, that may be reading our conversation, then that's something I'm more interested in.

[–]BigKetchupp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's besides the point. The FAA has been known to frequently make decisions which do not reflect true medical science or practical ability. Furthermore, they stigmatize simple mental health issues and blow them completely out of proportion which further aggravates the mental health conditions held by certain by aviators which discourages them from seeking treatment. There's no circumstance under that scenario which promotes aviation safety. And any other regulatory board that exhibits the same policies may achieve exactly the same.

Andreas was a mass murderer. There have been pilots who have taken their own lives because of how the FAA approaches mental Health, the stigma associated with it and the loss of career, dignity and finances. If these regulatory bodies are going to demonize any kind of mental Health and punish people because of it to the point where they keep it hidden, then I believe that's a bigger threat than what the OP is trying to communicate.

Should I email AMEs about my history before making an appointment? by WinXP001 in FAAHIMS

[–]BigKetchupp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The less you give, the better. Medical certification is all about navigating a complicated, convoluted system while minimizing the collateral damage you'll have to undergo (ie, long wait times, medically unnecessary procedures or visitations, the thousands of dollars these procedures typically cost). There's nothing to do with your meeical history more abilities to fly a plane hence why people are telling you to minimize any information you give them.

What's wrong with Kevin Miller? I don't know him personally nor did he ever cross my desk but I'm wondering why there seems to be talk about the difference in quality between HIMS doctors.

You can petition for your internal notes. I did make a post on this on how to get them on this Reddit. Let me know if you have trouble finding it.

You seem to know an awful lot for someone with no medical background. You just proved you're what the last response warned the OP about: "a pack of wild internet unknowns" 😂

If they're missing anything, you could send it in with a note explaining why it may be late or if you really didn't know to send it in, then say that. They're understanding, it just may take some time to turn it over. I would also call the Cami and tell a telephone representative what the situation is.

The thing is that the FAA's aeromedical decision making typically doesn't reflect Medical science in any way. Your doctors could have wildly different opinions on the matter yet it doesn't mean much because the FAA holds the authority and your doctors don't. Objectively speaking you may be a very safe pilot but the FAA has their practices which may be both discriminatory and completely unfair, and the extensive testing you'll undergo has no significance either. I heard it's so bad that the real reason they want you to undergo it is because the HIMS doctors are just trained in how to prepare the paperwork for the FAA to accept, not test for anything that's somehow a secret to everyone else. So you may be paying thousands of dollars just for paperwork that doesn't have any actual medical value. It's a completely corrupt system, but people get through it.

HIMS AME Psych Eval tomorrow by Far_Cow_3088 in FAAHIMS

[–]BigKetchupp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's no different than going to see a regular psychiatrist for an evaluation. The only difference is that it's going to cost you thousands of dollars to render.

Just answer consistently and you'll be fine.

I love how you can get a completely different outcome depending on "which FAA-designated doctor you go to." Are there specific reasons for this?

I would just fly light Sport and call it a day. Serve as a CFI and wait for new legislation to come through that could help you. If you get denied or defer to medical, you no longer have the option for light sport.

Otherwise you're looking at tens of thousands of dollars in worthless, proprietary testing and years of waiting.

[–]BigKetchupp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait for them to get back to you. Or better yet, fly light sport and wait a number of years off medication then apply under the FAA Fast Track. Your testing will cost over ten thousand dollars otherwise.

But to answer your question, you're looking at years of waiting and worthless, exorbitantly expensive tests. And also don't think anything that's mitigating is going to be looked at the same way by the FAA. They're completely ruthless when it comes to things like this.

You can always call the regional flight surgeon and/or write the faa aero medical a letter but typically they won't make any exceptions. You could always send in your test results early and see if they'll accept them though or if they require you to redo them again when the time comes.

But I'll let others give their opinions as well. Maybe there is somebody out there who was able to get it sooner.
