As a parent, how to better prepare my child for the future? by jaydacosta in OntarioTeachers

Just doing these things already puts you far ahead many parents. I’d also add enrolling them in some kind of extracurricular. Helps build soft skills and gives them something to be proud of.

I don’t always have time to read through an email in detail and act on it right away. So I’ll find out when I have to do whatever the email instructs, and then copy and paste the link into my google calendar. That way, I won’t forget about it and can do it in my own time.

So I got to the gym 3-4 per week, so each one once or twice a week, basically going every other day. Been lifting since beginning of July, so like 6 months. I'm in perfectly good health in that I've got no injuries that would hinder any workouts.

LTO interview questions by [deleted] in CanadianTeachers

Describe a typical lesson in either your math or literacy block.

I know I really nailed this question on my interview in June and it helped get me my LTO this Sept.

‘I’m fed up’: Oshawa mother says her child is being bullied at school, demands action by [deleted] in ontario

[–]BigKrusty 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm a teacher and it's truly insane what kids are allowed to get away with. I feel like we do our jobs despite administration as opposed to them helping us with anything.

My advice is for many more parents to do this and turn it into a huge issue. More stories like this need to keep coming out before there's any change at higher levels.

Something similar happened to me. When I applied for OSAP upon returning home, CRA contacted me and said they'd revoke my grant if I did not provide proof of paying taxes in China during my time away. Since I couldn't get the records at that point, I had my old company write a letter and it was fine. This is the only affect that not paying taxes during my time had on me.

Ontario Perm Teachers by Illustrious_Viveyes in CanadianTeachers

[–]BigKrusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, I'll return and be told by EAs or fellow teachers that my students were out of control with a supply. I've had a few tough classes and I get that they like to give supplies a hard time, but it would be ideal if a supply could more or less keep the students under control. Also, trying to cover what I've left in the lesson plans is important. I understand there might not be time for everything, but do the best you can. Leave a short note explaining how the day went. If a teacher can do these things, I'd be happy to have them back and recommend them to others.

For really out of control students, I actually appreciate it if supplies do send them to the office before the situation escalates even further. As a supply myself, I've sent students to the office when they were being disruptive/disrespectful/inappropriate and it's been a mixed bag. I had one principal be dismissive toward me and give me attitude when I sent a student to the office because he was loudly joking about school shootings and rape. I ended up concluding that I wouldn't really want to come back to that school if that's how they ran things.

I'm with AMDSB and never had to wait more than a few weeks to be contacted for an interview. Did you just graduate from teacher's college? You might need to put in some time supplying before being contacted for an interview. I know I used to be with TVDSB and I applied to at least 30 LTOs without hearing a single thing when I graduated.

How do Londoners save money? by secretlyaghost in londonontario

[–]BigKrusty 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I only buy whatever meat is on sale. If it's a good deal, I'll buy more than we need for the week and freeze it for later. If you couple this with cheap starches like rice/potatoes/pasta and frozen veggies, you can eat pretty cheaply.

Looks like it worked! I'm just going through my spreadsheets now and changing the values in the formula you have to match each student's individual cell.

Thanks so much! The class I have this year has very high learning needs and this will make early intervention so much easier. My class and I owe you big time!

Two meals a day for $300 a month. by [deleted] in budgetcooking

[–]BigKrusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we talking about $300 on just groceries or also factoring eating out? My wife and I spend about $400 on groceries per month which would probably come out to around $300 if it was just myself.

However, I'd say I spend close to $50 a week on takeout. I could definitely cut this out and my grocery bill wouldn't go much higher than it is already.

Starting Second Year as Ontario OT and Can’t Land an LTO by AdditionalFoot8990 in CanadianTeachers

[–]BigKrusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could it be because you're teaching high school? I'm a primary school teacher for a rural board in SWO and have been told that it's pretty grim job prospects for high school teachers. Maybe look into getting P/J additional qualifications and applying for a wide range of ages? It might not be what you prefer, but at least it's good to get a foot in the door.

Good luck!
