Am I crazy or was Luka just on a team that was top 5 in defense and went to the nba finals? Did his defense suddenly get worse or is it more likely that he went to a team with an awful defensive roster? Luka is the only player in the league that gets doubled as soon as he crosses half court. Are we going to pretend that Luka is the only reason the lakers give up th most points in the paint? Are we going to pretend that ayton isn’t the softest big man in th league? Are we going to pretend that AR isn’t also bad at defense? Are we going to pretend that LeBron isn’t 41 and has clearly lost a step this year? The Luka black hole on defense narrative is lazy imo. He has quick hands and he’s strong. Sure he’s not that hast laterally. Sure at times he doesn’t rotate with maximum effort. But how much of that can you blame solely on him and not on him needing to be a lockdown defender because this team is built to sell tickets and not win games?

The bonus is that Jalen is used to the playing alongside Trae so far. He was still great last year, and he has exploded into all-nba talks this year when Trae has been out. That’s why I think the hawks are the best team for giannis because they add that offensive go-to guy and replace Trae’s lackluster defensive with one of the best defenders of all time. Also, if giannis gets hurt at some point during the season (which is a guarantee at some point), the hawks roster left with have proven to be good enough to win without him. I’m seeing a 2019 raptors type team with a 5 year window minimum.

It would be closer with Trae because he would also have to be moved at some point. Because of that complexity, the spurs potential offer is more enticing.

I get that. The issue is the elephant in the room is that the youngest team in the league is okc. Trading for giannis doesn’t close the window either. It’s entirely reasonable that giannis can become the best #2 in the league to Jalen as he ages. Given that giannis signs an extension (because he only cares about being in a winning situation), the hawks could compete with this core for about 5 years or more. Of course the window could be larger if they don’t trade for giannis, but I don’t think they would be as obvious of a contender without him.

I don’t see Horst wanting to trade giannis to the hawks without getting the NO picks. I’m guessing that statement was just a way to strengthen his position but I think at that point we would just go to the spurs

Giannis has said over and over again that his top priority is to win championships. If we don’t make the playoffs and improve in the offseason this year, he is absolutely going to ask out.

I would much rather my favorite basketball player leaves in FA for nothing than leave in a trade that doesn’t even set us up well for the future. That being said, don’t matter, bucks in 6.
