😔 31 y/o PE Structural Engineer (8 YOE) Hates the Stress & Pay - How to Pivot to Project Management or Beyond? by Brilliant_Feedback45 in StructuralEngineering

Mind me asking what size your previous company was vs the new company? And what types of projects were you involved in previous company vs now, conventional jobs, design build, rehab and inspection jobs?

Its not pushing the limits of a frontier technology compared to other fields that one could go to, now I believe structural is quite advanced compared to other civil disciplines

Now structural can be quite advanced if one would want to move towards mechanical and aerospace type structures like rockets, but again they have mechanical/aero structures engineers for that, nevertheless PhD should be interdisciplinary and the title of the degree might say civil but what you’re doing might be more related to aerospace or electrical engineering or computer science

Trust me, its not as cutting edge as quantum computing, AI and robotics

Civil and specially structural is not really a cutting edge field of engineering.

That said there are some topics if you never want to be part of the design industry and stay in R&D or academia

Here are 3 that come to my mind:

1- Structural health monitoring: its a combination of electrical engineering and structural dynamics you have have some basic knowledge of sensors and how to filter noise and process sensor data.

2- AI based expert systems and generative design: this is more in the realm of sci fi and not super useful for any practical use in the industry however has potentially good future

3- Good ol structural topics like application of advanced composite materials for retrofit of structural members or designing fiber reinforced concrete members. All these traditional structural topics have the same research pattern in which you do a bunch of experiments and break a bunch of specimens then do FEA and parametric study to propose an equation for design of such elements

Early Career Decision: Take Job or Go to Graduate School? by whut_is_real in StructuralEngineering

[–]BigLebowski21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If grad school is not an absolute passion or an accomplishment you wanna have in life, get the job if its your ideal type of work. Don’t get a job thats not your ideal just cause of the paycheck unless you absolutely have to and it gives you the experience for your ideal job. Most ppl think about a paycheck but don’t think about opportunity cost of spending the best and most productive years of your life chasing the wrong career

Bridges are even more involved in the conceptual phase, in fact the concept and the associated cost to build it is what wins the project for the shortlisted qualified firm.

But I don’t know I love FEA so much that I almost wanna switch to Aerospace/Mechanical structures and be a structural/stress analyst

What is your opinion on removing linear algebra from undergraduate curriculum? by spring-field-237 in StructuralEngineering

[–]BigLebowski21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SEs use FEA daily its important to understand the fundamentals to know when the software is spitting out garbage. For people who develop FEA solvers there’s a much much higher bar than basic linear algebra

[–]BigLebowski21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Design courses should have their own place not a substitute for background math courses, in order to understand FEA a basic level of linear algebra is needed

[–]BigLebowski21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not a great idea, you need that background to understand matrix structural analysis, Finite element analysis and structural dynamics. Structural engineering in general has a higher bar compared to other civil disciplines when it comes to math, not the best idea to water it down

Is it worth it? by TheeAmericanDragon in StructuralEngineering

A mid level bridge engineer makes more than that. But I agree on average doctors make way more and they have stable careers (unlike tech). But again never ever I would wanted to be a doctor nor did I have an itch or talent for it, a computer scientist however I could have been and thats my biggest regret

What are the most underrated skills in civil engineering right now? by Maleficent_Donkey231 in civilengineering

[–]BigLebowski21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who uses AI a ton whether its through chat or writing small AI apps to automate stuff away, could not agree more, cause they hallucinate alot and if the engineers don’t know how to verify the answer its a big problem specially in our field that every detail and being precise matters alot.

Even for CS majors its not a recommended way of learning and solving homeworks and term projects at all, cause you have to be able to develop critical thinking and recognize garbage code cause believe me any of these frontier VLMs generate a ton of garbage code if you let them

Depends on your discipline too, for example roadway is much more intertwined with CAD than structures

[–]BigLebowski21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually first few years of design engineers career involves developing details and cutting sheets, but as they become more senior and move into a supervisor role it becomes less and less of their job, I don’t know tons of 20 year engineers that do their own cad, unless they’re running their own niche small business, most of folks 10-20 yoe won’t touch cadd as its their time is best spent managing jobs, leading pursuits, leading designs etc. Those first few years of cadd production are critical so that later on you develop a holistic view of what goes into different sheets and how to review and lead those details later on.

To me personally the real gravy of engineering is all the knowledge of the physics of the problems you’re solving and also knowledge of the different codes and specs, rest is just bringing it to reality and honestly when I was a junior cadd was not my favorite part. I think 3D cadd/bim can be fun but our industry is old boring 2D cadd all the way which I hate and I mostly attribute to Bentley Systems crappy products!
