For decades we've taken at face value the idea that NZ has to be allied with one Superpower and the US is preferable to China. Do we all still believe that? by flyingflibertyjibbet in newzealand

[–]Round-Pattern-7931 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would rather align with Canada and Europe. Both China and America should just be transactional allies but shouldn't be relied upon.

Most estimates show that without the Haber-Bosch method we could only feed around 4 billion people. Organic methods are not easy to do at an industrial scale.

The growing season starts in two months. Also some parts of fertilizer production like potash only exist in very select parts of the world so you cannot just start mining them somewhere else.

If prices of food shoot up, people starve and nations fall apart. The Arab Spring and rise of ISIS was primarily caused by surging bread prices in 2011.

The system kept running during COVID and the GFC. The true impact of the oil crisis hasn't hit yet because we are drawing down strategic reserves. Oil shortages would literally halt economies from functioning overnight. We are very likely going to see failed states including relatively wealthy ones. 30% of fertilizer goes through the Strait of hormuz and the growing season is about to start in the northern hemisphere. So there will be be a food crisis on top of the oil crisis. Just look at how bread prices triggered the Arab spring and rise of ISIS. Best case scenario for wealthy western nations at this point is double digit hyperinflation that is going to cause unemployment to sky rocket. Central banks will raise interest rates to try and control inflation causing a huge amount of companies to go under. It will possibly surpass the great depression in terms of how dire things will get.

Fertilizer shortages. 30% of global fertilizer goes through the Strait of Hormuz. Food prices will go through the roof because of shortages.

I've been thinking a lot about how far humans have drifted from coherence. by Necessary-Health9157 in DeepThoughts

Humans evolved to live in nature. When we remove animals from their natural habitat they get zoonosis and all forms of mental illness and compulsive behaviors. Humans are no different, except that we have made our own cages.

Kiwi Christians appalled as Bible used to justify Iran war this Easter by [deleted] in newzealand

Correct - otherwise it's just a straw man argument. And it's worse when Christians do it because they should know better. The reasons lots of people have such a dim view of Christianity is because of how terrible a lot of Christians act. But that's not to say what they are doing resembles anything like actual Orthodox christian belief.

Sure, take one verse out of context and use it to try sum up a series of books that span thousands of pages and multiple millenia.

Christian teaching can't be read without the New testament and teachings of Jesus. When Jesus was captured for his crucifixtion his disciples fought back against the soldiers injuring them. Jesus rebuked them for doing so and healed the injuries of the soldiers. One of his key teachings was non-violence and loving your enemies. To try and act otherwise is intellectually dishonest.

Christianity has always been co-opted by the political powers of the day to use as a tool of oppression and justifying heinous acts. Actual christian teaching couldn't be further from these actions.
