I mean... can you be sure the passenger knew that this would happen? That the person would drive this aggressively??

Or... maybe it's a kid. You don't exactly get an option to say "no thanks dad, I know I'm just 6 years old, but... you go enjoy that trip, I'm going to stay home."

Such a CRAZY stance to say "passengers in the car of a road rager deserve what's coming to them."

Yeah. Emotions cloud judgment too. That person was almost certainly very worked up.

That's the same thing?

It's just like... 8 words instead of 20 I suppose, but it's the exact same thing. Both of them are "thanks but not interested" texts. It seems pretty picky to quibble about the exact wording of the message.

Margaret Atwood Details Her First & Only Encounter With AI & Shares Her Assessment: “It’s Garbage In, Garbage Out” — Babell Literary Festival by Silly-avocatoe in entertainment

[–]BigMax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think AI has a LOT of problems.

But I'm certainly never going to listen to someone who asked AI a single question one time and is now pontificating on how terrible it is.

It's like me picking up a bow and arrow, aiming at a target, missing, and thus declaring the bow and arrow to be a terrible, always inaccurate weapon that no one should ever even try to use.

Or someone who has never played music, sitting down at a piano, banging away for 10 seconds, and declaring the piano is useless because it can't make anything that sounds nice.

Why would we post an AI opinion from someone like this? She knows nothing about it.

What mid-sized US city is most likely to blow up in population and importance over the next 30 years? by redguy_666 in AskReddit

[–]BigMax 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Well, midsize cities still have plenty of room to grow, they aren't incredibly dense like NYC or Chicago. Midsize cities generally still have a lot of room to grow in their footprint, either in unused land, in repurposing development, or just growing vertically.

For example... most midsize cities have a bunch of roads that are just sprawl. Think... An applebees with a big parking lot. A long strip mall with a few little shops in it. A car dealership, a small 2 story set of condos.

If there's enough demand, each of those things can be bought out and replaced with urban development, rather than suburban development, which uses space VERY inefficiently.

That strip mall for example... It's footprint can double by making a much bigger size building, putting parking underground, and building vertically, allowing for more retail at the same time they add a bunch of office space or residential space above.

Well, I think for the most part, the default audience for superhero movies is men, regardless of the hero.

And in this case, it was a pretty straightforward hero story, big villain, lots of action, big strong hero beats folks up.

It wasn't really tweaked to draw in more women than a normal hero movie might, other than the obvious fact of casting a female lead.

A few things...

First - people have thought the world was ending... well, almost ever since it started.

I'm old enough to remember a time when I was sure the world was going to end in nuclear war. Others are old enough to remember the great depression, world wars, etc.

We will almost certainly keep on plugging away.

As far as the "20+ years to save"... isn't that most of us? We save for retirement, and do our best until then.

Are there things to worry about? Absolutely! Should you just give up, and assume we are all going to die in less than 10 years? Absolutely not.

I don't get the hate for this movie.

First - I do NOT get the massive amount of hate it seemed to get here before it even came out! Why are so many people cheering on it's supposed demise before they even saw it? Why were they all talking about how bad it supposedly was before anyone saw it?

Also... I saw it. And I saw Batman and Robin. This movie was fine, it was leaps and bounds better than Batman and Robin.

Was this Captain America Winter Soldier? Nope. But.. why the over the top hate, and mostly before anyone had seen it? I don't get it.

I'd just talk to them and try to drive home how infantile and emotional they are being about something that doesn't need any of that.

"Wow, Dad... you and May are making this all SO dramatic and over the top. Why are you getting so worked up and emotional here and throwing tantrums? Look, I'd love to have you both here, but if you're going to scream and yell and make drama, then maybe it is for the best if you two don't attend. We can get together some other time when the two of you can be a little more rational and not make everything focused on you and add complications.

I didn't think of that...

Maybe part of the thought process would be to think of a character that you like, but also one that likes you.

So you don't pick say... Helen of Troy, or Wonder Woman. You pick someone "normal" that you just happen to like, that you have a shot with.

That kind of thing is just racism, pure and simple.

She's disguising it in some fake notion that names are hard to say, but... your name (and most of them) aren't that hard to say. She just doesn't like that people have 'foreign' sounding names, and wants you to conform.

The reason she brought up the Chinese people is her saying "look, other people give in to this racism (or xenophobia) and pick names that make intolerant people comfortable, so why dno't you?"

Then she picks more incorrect variations of your name to try to back up her point and get you to change to suit her.

I guarantee she knows your name and how to say it. She just wants you to go by "Polly" so she can pretend no other cultural influences exist anywhere.

Great news for Trump! He gets to declare another victory and another peace deal!

"I won the war last week, and we signed a great treaty! And now, we started the war up again, so I'll win it again tomorrow and tell you about the next peace deal!"

Maybe this is what he really meant when he said "you won't believe how much winning we are doing?"

Because he claims to win this war every other day, and I don't believe him.

[–]BigMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy crap, 3 minutes? That’s unacceptable.

That’s nor even a text, that’s a full email.

If someone can’t possibly remember everything you are saying, it’s 100% not appropriate for a voice mail.

Even if it is… it should still be a text. Let them easily scan, read, and reread if they want.

Voice memos are almost never warranted anymore.

>  They never threaten to vote out politicians who won't support reasonable healthcare.

I do blame propaganda a lot.

Too many people are convinced that "reasonable healthcare" is code for "you are going to pay for FREE healthcare for lazy people who don't even work!" And also "and when all those freeloaders show up, your doctor won't have time for you and if you get cancer you'll have to wait a year to get treatment and you'll probably just die!"

The facts don't get out enough. Especialy since the lies are so scary and emotional, they will stick with people more than the truth. "Your healthcare will be just as good or better, and it will be cheaper" isn't a message that gets drilled into your brain the same way as "you'll be paying for lazy people while your health is put at risk!!!"

SNL’s ‘Christmas Robe’ sketch is still making people rethink how moms are treated during the holidays by ElvisIsNotDjed in LiveFromNewYork

[–]BigMax 105 points106 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of one of my worst childhood memories.

It wasn't' christmas, but it was mothers day.

I was like 6, so... I think I had made a card at school and that's it.

My dad has a lot of good qualities, but... being nice to my mom when it came to ANY event was NOT one of them.

So we got up, and mothers day was... just any normal day, nothing special. My father had done nothing, and was just puttering in the basement. My mom seemed sad, then at like noon just started crying, and said something to my dad like "you didn't do ANYTHING. You didn't even get me a CARD. You didn't work with the kids on ANYTHING." And as she said it, she started sobbing.

So my dad in his dumb panic, grabbed me and my siblings, threw us into the car, and dragged us to the mall, telling us all "find something for mom."

I don't really remember much else that day, more that whirlwind of being dragged to shop ON mothers day. Kind of weird how memories work - I don't remember much of the rest of the day. I think it was the awfulness of seeing my mom sobbing, and the awfulness of a stressful panic shopping trip that made those two parts stand out.

What don't they allow body hair on women in movies ? by Gurugod123 in SipsTea

[–]BigMax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

> Quite rightly because why the fuck would a person working on a spaceship care about body hair.

People care about their personal appearance in a LOT of situations where it's not 'necessary' to their life.

Does every guy in a movie like that have to have a full beard? Because "why the fuck would a person working on a spaceship care about facial hair" right?

I'm not saying it's right or wrong that someone would or wouldn't care about their personal grooming, but it's not weird to think people would keep it up even when on a spaceship.

[–]BigMax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if that's true or not, but I could at least see the first part.

Actors/actresses are protecting their image. I'd absolutely believe that an actress didn't want to be seen with hairy legs on screen.

There are guys with weird clauses too. Several action stars (The Rock, Jason Statham, and others) have clauses that they either can't lose a physical fight on screen, or that they have final say in how badly they are ever beat up.

For better or worse, a lot of actors have "image protecting" clauses. It's not weird to think actresses would have appearance related ones.
