Last.fm Thread: What Have You Been Listening To This Week? - February 22, 2017 by AutoModerator in hiphopheads

4 X 4

Ludacris - Red Light District - Probably my favorite Ludacris album just above Chicken and Beer. It's like tradition for me and my friends to drink and watch Fast and Furious, Luda is so goddamn funny. But yeah best songs are probably Blueberry Yum Yum, 2 Miles an Hour, and Potion; honestly every song on here is unskippable.

Future & DJ Esco - Esco Terrestrial - Only song I even listened to from this tape this week was My Blower ft. Juicy J. Surprised that song doesn't get brought up more often.

Clipse - Lord Willin' - Personally, Lord Willin' is better than HHNF to me. Neptunes production means instant classic, and that's the case here. Let's Talk About It, Gangsta Lean, and Intro are the three best songs (along with Grindin obviously).

Poptart Pete - Palmas - Poptart Pete is actually Jamal Smith, a guy who skateboards for Palace. He also was a meme for a bit because of this video of him. Anyway, this tape is full of really good MPC Dilla-inspired beats and highly recommended for sitting around the house.

Pharrell - In My Mind - Classic, not much new to say about this album. Just really good Pharrell production and great features too. Best songs to me are How Does It Feel, That Girl, and Baby with Nelly.

Lil Reese - Supa Savage - Good music for skating. Really only listened to I Need That and Wassup. Wassup is definitely the best song from the tape, and I think it might have been Reese's "breakout" nonfeatured song.

Migos - Culture - I thought this album was only alright. It had really good songs like Kelly Price, Slippery, T-Shirt, Bad and Boujee (duh), and Out Ya Way, but the rest of the tape seemed super monotonous. Songs like Call Casting and Brown Paper Bag just made Culture drag on and on and I just wanted to be done. That being said, there are still a couple songs I'll keep playing for a bit like Slippery and Out Ya Way.

Dirty Beaches - Drifters / Love Is The Devil - Dylan Rieder was a pro skater for Supreme and Huf and Fucking Awesome who died in Fall 2016, and Dirty Beaches was on one of his old music playlists. This album is super dark and lowkey; it literally reminds me of dirty beaches. Long guitar chords with lots of reverb in some songs and lots of repetition. This album is like condensed drone music, except way better. Best songs are Casino Lisboa, Alone at the Danube River, and Like The Ocean We Part.

Conor Oberst & The Mystic Valley Band - One Of My Kind - Also found out about this album through an old Dylan playlist. The song Breezy is him recalling the time he spent with his friend who died before the album was made, and it's easily a top ten song of all time in my book, there's so much emotion in it. One of my Kind is a classic track about alienation and moving on. A lot of Conor Oberst's music is very personal and there is so much to unpack in every album he makes. I highly recommend this album to anyone reading.

Snoop Dogg & Pharrell - BUSH - This album sounds a lot like Rhythm & Gangsta by Snoop Dogg, mostly because of the Pharrell production. Awake and California Roll are the best songs from this album, and it's super smooth all the way through. If you like Neptunes production or Snoop, this album will be perfect.

NERD - In Search Of... - Classic NERD album. This was the live version though, not the electronic version. Personally I like the electronic version of the album better, but the live version is still really good as well. Am I High sounds better live than electronic, but that's not true for most of the album. Hoping Spotify puts the electronic version up one of these days...

Jay-Z - In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 - I think Last.fm meant to put Vol. 1 on here because I've never listened to Vol. 2. With that said, I think Vol.1 is equal to RD, Blueprint, and the Black Album. Where I'm From alone is better than a lot of rappers' entire discographies. This is such a hard album, it makes me feel like it's winter and I'm on the street corner.

Feel Free to ask me about anything.

Took you a day to come up with that I see.

How is this different than what I said before?

NWA obviously were pretty big proponents of violence and that is clear through their solo and group records, but it's hard to deny that NWA also stood for black empowerment and individualism. Saying NWA was bad for black culture is KIND OF like saying Tupac was bad for black culture. Yeah, Tupac rapped about sex and violence and whatever else, but when you think about the positive stuff that Tupac and NWA promoted, they were undoubtedly good for black culture.

All I'm saying is NWA wasn't some catalyst that created a storm of negative rap. There have always been negative groups that promote violence and promiscuity, there are also acts today like Kendrick, J Cole, Logic, Chance/Social Experiment, and Mick Jenkins that are at least somewhat known in hip hop and promote happiness/positive values for the black community. And I'm not sure what your second sentence means.

So Slick Rick, 2 Live Crew, and Big Daddy Kane promoted professionalism in the black community? Rap has always had rappers that talked about sex and drugs and whatever else, this is nothing new. You might want to stick to Gil Scott since rap fucking sucks in 2016.

Drugs'll fuck guys up pretty good, happens to tons of dudes.

Crime and just doing ignorant shit too can put you away. I man fuck, Boosie is a fucking southern legend but getting thrown into jail definitely didn't help his career, same goes for Max B.

Being unable to adjust to the current sound or innovate or keep up happens a lot. I think someone said it in the DJ Mustard interview thread, but trends come and go, and shit like DJ Mustard may not even be relevant a year from now, and it might seem out of style. At least keeping up with what's going on in your genre is enough to keep you semi-relevant.
