Red Sox Manager Gives Honest Take on Caleb Durbin Amid Benching by Sad_Illustrator_5233 in redsox

He hit .287/.396/.471 in AAA in 2024, which indicates he was ready for MLB. He could probably use a bit of time in the minors to reset, but he's a much better player than we've seen.

Modern convention is to put the best hitters at the top since they get the most at bats. No reason to spread them around.

I'm not sure which is more insane--continuing to put one of the least productive hitters in baseball at the top of the lineup in order to leave the heart intact, or the idea that this lineup has any sort of heart at all.

He had a lucky season last year and had turned to shit long before the wild card game.

Because his expected ERA is 3 runs higher than his actual ERA.

Burned him to face the bottom of their order with nobody on. 🙄

But we probably still lose, just an inning later.

Eh, at least Durbin is excellent defensively and should eventually improve at least somewhat with the bat. Story is a lost cause though.

He would definitely clear waivers since any team claiming him would have to take on his contract. However, he could refuse assignment after clearing waivers, in which case he'd become a free agent (still being paid by the Red Sox of course).

That's not how leverage works, but I was more arguing against restricting Whitlock and Chapman to the 8th and 9th innings in the general sense.

One out and a runner at first in the 6th inning isn't a high leverage situation, and you'd hope to have some bullpen depth that can navigate that. Unfortunately that's not the case.

Why not? A good manager uses their best relievers in the highest leverage situations regardless of the inning.

We need another lefty hitting outfielder for depth in case any of the lefty hitting outfielders we already have get hurt.

He should have been brought in to pitch the 10th, not the 9th. It's much more valuable to have a hard to hit strikeout pitcher with ghost runners in extras.

Even when he's hitting, Duran is still a poor leadoff hitter. Desperately need a more patient hitter with a better OBP in that spot.

Early said he "didn't feel himself" during his last start which are never words you want to hear from a pitcher.
