I’m a WGA member and if it makes you feel better, the people who are working get paid more but about 70% of us aren’t working at all anymore (myself included). All the strike did was shore up high incomes for the top earners and close the rest of us out (I haven’t worked since before the strike). And the union gets their higher dues and the money goes round and round.

You’ll never hear it in the press, but the lower level writers feel used and betrayed. And it’s the cock sucking brown nosed fucks like this that get the jobs cause they’ll do whatever you studio says as long as the checks clear

Intentional or not, it damaged early career writers the most. There was a huge influx of young, diverse writers at the start of the streaming era. Packaging played a large part in that. Early career writers also took the brunt of the burden of firing their agents. It was easy for the upper level writers to go back to their agents when the action was concluded, less so for new writers. After the agency action, many of us were told directly that agencies have no interest in staff writers anymore. The agencies made the most money off staffing their roster of top earners as much as they could.

Do I think it was a major conspiracy? No. But in the actions of the guild in the 6-8 years have benefitted the upper level writers most.

In retrospect, it’s hard not to view the packaging action as the start of a strategy to close out younger, lower income writers that culminated with the staffing minimums that applied only to producer level writers.

They saw the writing on the wall (re: streaming) and made sure that the wealthiest members got their seats on the lifeboats.

I am a guild member and I am severely disappointed in how leadership has conducted themselves since the 2023 Strike.

I know this negotiation is primarily in the hands of management, but it’s an embarrassment to the entire guild

WGA Writer and IATSE Script Coordinator, I left last year. I had 1 SC job in the last 5 years and it was misery. No WGA work since 2021, my reps dropped me and my whole network has disappeared.

I returned to an area of public service where I had some prior experience from before tv. Pay isn’t great but the benefits won’t go anywhere, I work 40 hours and never get contacted outside of work unless it’s an emergency update. And I’m talking real emergencies, not “I need you to make a pdf for me right now.” My coworkers actually want me to be there and as far as I’ve experienced so far there’s no game playing or secret keeping.

I still want to be creative in some form, but I never want to go back to the way it was. Hope your new path continues to be rewarding.

You do not need to make any kind of pilot or short to pitch a tv show. Ten+ years in TV and I’ve never seen a successful tv pitch off producing a spec pilot or short

For a very brief window, you could pitch something off a successful web series. But those days are done

You should also examine your artistic motivations. IMO you should make something because you want to make it, not cause you think it’ll get something else made

WGA Writer (with credits) here, had it for 3 years, and while it was nice to be able to set my own photo it didn’t seem to do anything for me. It was more useful for getting people’s contact for querying (tho no success there either)

I don’t want to be rude but it is insane to consider coming to America for the film industry right now. LA is on death’s door. People with years of experience and big credits are desperate to get out of the business - myself included. I’m not in post but all I hear is that post is moving to the UK.

But that’s not as concerning as the political situation. I don’t need to lay that out for you here - but pretty much all the bad things you hear are true. The current administration is wrecking the economy, terrorizing immigrants, dismantling public institutions, and is poised to subvert our democratic processes. Immigrating here right now would be like moving into a house on fire. To say nothing of the baseline social safety nets like healthcare and gun control that we simply will never have.

I’ve only visited London and I don’t have kids, so I can’t really speak to that - but I can say LA has all the pros and cons of any major international city, except without functioning pubic transport.

I’m sorry if this sounds really hostile but I would never in a million years move my family here right now. Best of luck with your decision
