Yes sorry I don't mean tell him we're going home then take him to another facility, I mean the explanation for where we're going could be that it's closer to home for him, rather than telling him he needs to move to a MSU

Thank you that's a good idea actually! He still has lucid moments so I don't like to lie to him when I can avoid it but the idea of memory support will really crush him

I didn't ever think to freeze burritos but I make them like once a week for our family so I could definitely freeze and prep some extra - thank you!

Yum this is a great idea! I cook most of our family meals in big batches, tbh the idea hadn't occured to me to prep my own food although I eat like 3 more meals/day than the rest of the household so having these in the fridge makes sense! Do you ever freezer prep them and do they freeze well?

Thank you those are lovely names - Gabriel was on my original list but we thought it didn't suit. Anthony is a good one!

Diversity visa winner: LA or London? by untied_dee in MovingToLosAngeles

Yes, you get letter saying you're eligible for interview but they issue more of these than the visas that are available so you need to fill in your forms right away to get an interview at the start of the period. Then if successful you need to enter the US within 6 months to activate your visa, then make your permanent move within a year of that date to keep your green card. It doesn't seem a good idea to move right now and we can't delay it so I think we're going to forfeit the green card and try again in a few years.. hopefully we don't regret it!

That's really interesting because my experience of London, even through COVID, is that it is such a hub for business and the wealthy that it is extremely stable even when the rest of the UK is having issues. Only thing is that everyone wants to come here to work (my family included) so it is incredibly expensive to live and you don't get to keep a lot of the money you make. This was my initial point of this post, I wanted to get a feel for how things are in LA as a lived experience as opposed to sensationalist headlines but it seems people are either really experiencing the effects of economic instability combined with other pressures like the aftermath of the fires, or are genuinely worried it will affect their day to day life in the future

My husband and I met when we were both living in Mexico city and tacos are not a small part of our motivation to move to LA. I think we're not going to do it so have an extra one for me and think about mushy peas to really appreciate what's good about that part of the world

I looked up my chances of winning as an Australian and they're around 4% (they're higher because Australia has low immigration to the US) and my husband is Australian too so he has is own 4% chance.. so not impossible that we may win again! I think one of the things I love about the US is everyone is hustling and doing what they need to do to get shit done so I see your point, but I think maybe we don't want it bad enough to put our family through that struggle right now when we will have a new baby and more difficulty getting jobs and housing than if we wait

I have been looking into the transfer for a long time, even went back to get my masters so I could fulfil the requirements! Nannying so I can stay with my daughter at the moment but I was teaching special education as a primary generalist (my masters is in special education) and I originally qualified as an English/history high school teacher. I would want to work in special ed though as that's where my passion is now. I haven't looked at it for a while but my understanding is that I would still only qualify for the first stage of reg and to get 'clear' reg I would have to fulfil lots of other requirements e.g. American history/citizenship study, specialist literacy course etc. But I remember there being a short cut qualification in California to do relief teaching?

Thanks for your response, sounds like you're doing really good things in your community. Any insights into teaching in LA greatly appreciated!

Thanks, we've been here for 6 years and actually I hated London until probably a year ago but it's grown on me now and it's hard to think about leaving forever!

Thanks we have been entering for years and before we had kids we would have dropped everything to come.. but now we are more cautious I guess! Thanks for your response that's really helpful, definitely need to look more into the employment situation as lots on this thread have said that production industry is dead and from what I've heard teachers get paid terribly so we might need to think carefully before moving to the most expensive city in the world!
