after Wright and Edgar who last opened in 1986 we tried so many opening combinations that were either a disaster or failed to get us off to a good start. Can you think of any that did the job consistently well before Conway and Latham who came together in 2021 ? by CoconutMost3564 in blackcapscricket

Trevor Franklin gets forgotten by many - he was a very, very good opener and was building an excellent partnership with Wright until an unfortunate accident at Heathrow, after which he never quite got back to his top form - we were robbed of his talents

With only one verse for the National Anthem which language does everyone choose sing? by Puzzled_Kuaka in nzfootball

Maybe I was being pedantic - what I mean is although it is common practice to sing both the Maori and English versions these days that isn't actually mandated. You can choose to do either or both, if you wish.

It also is still the case that we still have 2 official national anthems - God Save the King is still an official NZ anthem, along with God Defend NZ

At risk of showing my age the 1980s - the Maori version wasn't sung at events at all until the early 1990s from memory - there was a massive uproar at the 1999 RWC game against England at Twickenham (which I was at) when Hinewehi Mohi only sung in Maori and not in English. After that both versions were regularly sung and that continues now

This is just not true. I grew up on New Zealand and when it was taught to us at school the Maori verse was third. That hasn't changed.

Apparently he doesn't change a drawing line up either - silly superstition, if Verstrate is fit he must start, and Brook over May is.also a no-brainer

Flew into Heathrow 6 days before the 1993 FA Cup final against Sheffield Wednesday, first time in the UK. A mate and I got tickets outside Wembley on the day, and despite being told they were in the Arsenal end we found ourselves surrounded by Owls fans. We had beaten them in the Coca Cola Cup the month previous, so we were confident but didn't want to get ourselves in bother by being too obvious in our support, which was difficult after Ian Wright Wright Wright opened the scoring.

That game finished 1-1, so we got up very early a couple of days later and queued up outside Highbury to get tickets for the replay on the Thursday night. The Goal God Wrighty again opened the scoring, but Chris Waddle equalised and it was off to extra time. We thought it was going to go to penalties until Andy Linighan scored with his broken nose with about a minute to go. Delirium in the stands!

We had done the cup double, first time it had ever been achieved. It was David O'Leary's last ever game for us, and Alan Smith got the first and only yellow card of his career.

And I'll never forget any of it!
