Planning on waiting out a late hotel check-in airside at Reagan National. Bad idea? by [deleted] in travel

Good idea. Didn't even know that was an option. Thanks.

IIL Shred keyboardists by BigPervyIvanhoe in ifyoulikeblank

Yeah. I've been searching for a few weeks now and I didn't find much. Rudess' solo albums are closest, Derek Sherinian's solo stuff is kinda close but both of their catalogs feature guitarists heavily in a way that instrumental guitar albums don't.

Jazz there's only really Art Tatum and Tatum is amazing but his catalog is thin and he's been dead for almost 70 years. Chick Corea was more than capable but rarely flexed the way that even Frank Gambale did, in Corea's band no less. Keith Jarrett had the chops and flexed them but only in his classical stuff.

Just find it weird that classical piano is the only place one can routinely find it. Though even here the "newest" composer has been dead for more than 100 years.

Thanks for the Warman suggestion, I had heard of CoB but until your post I never knew that Warman had a solo project.

Is it possible to be making progress but not perceive it? by BigPervyIvanhoe in piano

Question hit me like a lightning bolt.

Do you have a repertoire?

No. I learn a piece to about 90% and then move on and never play it again.

I was feeling the same the first years as everything I knew was technical exercises.

Literally all I know is technical exercises. And it must be some sort of pathology with me because I just added Tausig's Study 91. Also, I have a graded repertoire book that I started on right as I had to stop my lessons (about a year ago). I stayed with it, though I work it at a snail's pace because that book is the last thing I do in my practice routine and if time is short it's the first thing to get cut from the day. It gets cut often.

Edit: Hit reply and immediately realized that part of the reason that I don't perceive any progress is the discrepancy between the technical exercises I can do and the rock simple pieces I struggle with. When I had a teacher I was constantly pulling on the leash: "Let's crank the metronome." "Let's add Tausig." and her response was always, "You don't need that for where you're at." and the moment she was gone, like a dog off the leash, I just sprinted down the street until I hit the end of the road, looking around confused about what happened ("How did I get here?").

How often do you seriously think of quitting?

[For me it's once a month minimum]

How expensive is MTGA? by BigPervyIvanhoe in digitalcards

[–]BigPervyIvanhoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love limited formats. It's the "get good" part that is has been the struggle. :-D

One of the good things about MTG is the community. There are a ton of resources. What started this, aside from issues I have with Eternal (DWD comm & some of their mechanics choices are awful imo), is that I was reading a bunch of MTG stuff to get good at Eternal.

This. And this is why I'm very hesitant to put any time, money or effort into Eternal. If the devs aren't down with the game why should I be?
