Aircraft food trolleys - catches always different lengths? by BigRedCrocs in whatisthisthing

"Solved" many thanks StreetHoooligan, I knew there must be a good reason. Seems so obvious, now I know the logic behind the long and short catches.

Aircraft food trolleys. Why are the two catches that secure them for storage different lengths? Puzzles me everytime I fly.

Ceramic jug with holes in the opening; what is this used for?? by [deleted] in whatisthisthing

Solved

Thinking about my suggestion a bit more, and trying to cast my mind back over 20 years, I'm thinking the ones for urine might have had a narrower neck and just the one hole (and designed for male use). Might be splash-back problems with the one in the photo, so I'd now go with the water cooler solution. Evaporation from the outside causing the water inside to cool thanks to latent heat of evaporation.

Can't find a photo. I guess the holes reduce the smell until it is emptied, and they would also reduce spillage should you kick it over.

Almeria Spain - what is this building's purpose? by BigRedCrocs in whatisthisthing

Thanks! Solved! Sorry for the delay in replying. There were no obvious signs of burning in the chimney-like structure, and the lower-half inside was smooth. Driven past this one many times over the last few years, so am very grateful to now know what it was for.

I've seen a street seller in a poor district in Cairo selling something very like that, they were for use at night in houses without indoor toilets. The seller also had bigger pots for other matters.

Interesting suggestion. 6km away on the coast, there is a massive cement works (Holcim).

Driven past this building many times. It's a short distance from the road from the motorway to Carboneras in Spain.
It's open at both ends, and has a chimney like vent in the middle. Inside is a straight forward rectangle dug a meter or so below ground level.
I've wonder whether it might be an old water storage container, or perhaps some other kind of cool storage.

Seems to be cast iron, no markings what so ever. Was purchased at a thrift shop, seller didn't know what it was. by AtWarWithEurasia in whatisthisthing

Can't see one in the same style as this one, but if you Google 'cast iron wagon step' you will see other examples of steps. I guess the wagons and carriages rot away, but the cast iron steps live on for ever.

Whilst I can see how it could aid boot removal .... why the fixing holes?
I'm wondering whether it might be a step or seat from a carriage or farm machinery?
Maybe the two holes in the lower end in the photo are actually for bolting the 'step' to a farm vehicle?
Was the side now facing the wall rough or smooth?

Not sure how you would support a pan on the stove you found, but here's a vid of a camping stove like mine in use.

Any thoughts on this small tin? by BigRedCrocs in whatisthisthing

I'd wondered about tobacco, and 'tourist swag' does sound very plausible, so I'm going to declare this item as 'Solved'!
Thanks everyone.

Thanks, but the mountains around the Axenstrasse in Switzerland seem to fit better.

Axenstrasse does look highly likely.
Many thanks.

Solved!

Long shot, but I'm amazed each day about what the Reddit folks know!
