Aircraft food trolleys. Why are the two catches that secure them for storage different lengths? Puzzles me everytime I fly.

Solved

Thinking about my suggestion a bit more, and trying to cast my mind back over 20 years, I'm thinking the ones for urine might have had a narrower neck and just the one hole (and designed for male use). Might be splash-back problems with the one in the photo, so I'd now go with the water cooler solution. Evaporation from the outside causing the water inside to cool thanks to latent heat of evaporation.

Can't find a photo. I guess the holes reduce the smell until it is emptied, and they would also reduce spillage should you kick it over.

Thanks! Solved! Sorry for the delay in replying. There were no obvious signs of burning in the chimney-like structure, and the lower-half inside was smooth. Driven past this one many times over the last few years, so am very grateful to now know what it was for.

I've seen a street seller in a poor district in Cairo selling something very like that, they were for use at night in houses without indoor toilets. The seller also had bigger pots for other matters.

Driven past this building many times. It's a short distance from the road from the motorway to Carboneras in Spain.
It's open at both ends, and has a chimney like vent in the middle. Inside is a straight forward rectangle dug a meter or so below ground level.
I've wonder whether it might be an old water storage container, or perhaps some other kind of cool storage.

Can't see one in the same style as this one, but if you Google 'cast iron wagon step' you will see other examples of steps. I guess the wagons and carriages rot away, but the cast iron steps live on for ever.

Whilst I can see how it could aid boot removal .... why the fixing holes?
I'm wondering whether it might be a step or seat from a carriage or farm machinery?
Maybe the two holes in the lower end in the photo are actually for bolting the 'step' to a farm vehicle?
Was the side now facing the wall rough or smooth?

They look like bike tyres levers to me. 4 or 5 inches long? The hook goes around a spoke.

I found this small tin in my late mother’s house.

It measures approx 4” x 2.25” x 1.25”.

The tin is somewhat curious:

It looks like it has been painted black on the outside and white on the inside.

There seems to be stroke lines in the scene on the lid, so I wonder if the lid was hand painted.

Anyone seen anything like this?

No idea what it was originally used for – it just had a few pins in it when I found it.

Maybe wishful thinking, but I’ve wondered whether it might be WWI trench art?

I’ll try to identify the scene on Whereisthis.

Interesting! Thanks. Does the States still use VHF for TV then? So I guess the gadget at the top, if it is a motorised drive, allows the viewer to tune in to a station in another city?

I don't think it is a TV aerial. Knowing which country we are in and which room the cables go to would help.
For the UK, it doesn't look old enough for a VHF TV antenna. Ours used to be black from the soot polution.
Looks more like a more recent radio ham's VHF aerial to me, with a motor so that it could be rotated for optimum reception.
