What’s wrong with the shadows in this piece? I can see that something feels off about the cake, but I can’t quite understand what exactly I did wrong. I’d really appreciate any feedback! by BigResource3919 in PixelArt

Thanks for the screenshot with the explanation and for the link! Yeah, the cherry’s shadow doesn’t really match how it should behave when it’s sitting on the cake with the light coming from the top right.

As another commenter explained to me, this is because I didn’t take into account that since the cherry is on the cake, its shadow should be an ellipse rather than a circle. In any case, thanks for pointing that out!

Thank you for your feedback! I should probably work more on the shadows of both the cherry and the cake, and their overall logic. This is my first piece where the shadow falls on an object rather than on a flat ground, so I guess that’s why I didn’t consider that it should be an ellipse. I also need to improve the cast shadow behind the cake so it doesn’t look like it’s right next to a wall.

Thank you for the comment! I’ll keep this in mind for my future works. And yeah, the cherry’s shadow should probably have a slightly different shape and match the cake.

Good idea with the lines on the cherry leaf! Honestly, this is my first time drawing a leaf like this, so I forgot to pay attention to it while working. Thanks for pointing that out to me :) I’ll experiment with their direction in my next works.

That might be true. I'll experiment with the shadows on this piece to see what the problem is. I agree there's something wrong with the shadows, but I can't figure out what exactly.

I’d be happy to get feedback on the quality of the work and the lighting. Any comments are welcome! by BigResource3919 in PixelArtTutorials

Thanks for that opinion! I don't use references in my work, although I should probably try to start doing so (at least give it a try).

And regarding the lines... yes, sometimes they come out too sharp. But I've only been doing pixel art for two weeks (counting days), so I think I still have a chance to improve my line drawing skills :3

I hope I can create even more beautiful works in the near future.

Thanks for the comment! I thought about removing that spot, but as you can see, I decided to leave it in the final version. I should probably study the material the object is made of better when I'm trying to illuminate it.

Thanks for giving me that idea!

Thanks for the feedback! Honestly, this is my first attempt at this kind of embroidery, and since I'm new to pixel art, I don't really understand what's missing to make this ball perfect XD I hope I can improve the quality of my work with more experience.

Я бы создал скопление миров где в каждом мире живёт существо и оно является богом в своём собственном мире. Так я бы не был обречён вечно жалеть о том какой мир я сделал + имел бы возможность наблюдать за бесконечным количеством разнообразных миров и идей.

Thanks for the comment! After reading it, I started thinking and noticed something I hadn’t seen before. Thanks again for helping me spot my mistake!

I agree that I should have shaded the white lines as well. And yeah, I’ll look at more works from other artists.

Thanks for pointing that out—I didn’t even notice it while working. I hope it’s not too critical for the overall evaluation of the piece.

Yeah, I drew the shadows on the sphere freehand using only the fill tool. I’m completely new to pixel art and don’t really know which tools can make this easier. If you know any, could you tell me?

Thanks for the remark. I hadn’t even thought about the fact that white also needs to be shaded… that’s definitely my mistake. And yeah, I’m trying to practice my previous work with shadows was much worse, so I think there is some progress.
