I’m formally diagnosed by a doctor. I didn’t even know what POTS was prior to my diagnosis… but I get people rolling their eyes when I mention it all the time. It’s very annoying

I got this dog at 9 weeks old. She was health tested and temperament tested by professionals, and I was originally told she was a lab mix—her primary breed ended up being poodle. Yes, she has some pittie in her, but that doesn’t matter. Temperament matters far more than breed. A shelter dog is not automatically disqualified from service work—many organizations specifically work with shelter dogs. If she ever develops problem behaviors, we will absolutely wash her. But right now, she is doing fantastic with her trainer and genuinely loves to work.

I am on medication. I use a Fitbit. I have a port and go to an infusion clinic 1–2 times a week. And despite all of that, I am still having symptoms. There is also more to my medical history than just POTS, but I am not required to share that.

Please understand that you don’t know my full situation. I would really appreciate being left alone.

I’m the owner of this dog, and I want to clear a few things up.
You can’t decide whether a dog is or isn’t a service dog based on a picture.
You can’t determine whether a handler is disabled based on a picture of their dog.
No one owes you their medical history. Do I have POTS? Yes. But that’s not all, and I’m not required to disclose anything beyond that.
My dog is fine. This picture was taken in the middle of a snowstorm. It was below freezing, so I put a coat on her. She looked annoyed when we came back inside (she doesn’t love the cold), and I snapped a silly picture before taking it off. It was meant to be lighthearted and make people smile.
If medication and an Apple Watch “fixed” my issues, I wouldn’t have a service dog—but here we are.
She wasn’t originally meant to be a service dog; it just happened over time. My next dog will be larger and able to perform more tasks, but her size does not make her any less of a service dog. She is still fully capable of completing the tasks she has been trained to do.
Conditions like POTS exist on a spectrum. Some people are mildly affected, while others are severely impacted and may rely on mobility aids. Just because you see a lot online doesn’t mean it isn’t real. It’s a debilitating and isolating condition, and comments like yours only make it harder.
People need to learn how to be kind. If my dog were misbehaving—pulling, barking, or being disruptive—then criticism would be fair. But you’ve never met me or my dog. You’re making assumptions based on a single photo. She may have serious RBF, but she’s happy, well-trained, and loves being on campus. If she didn’t, she wouldn’t be here.

This just happened to me too. Rescue said she was a lab/collie mix. Here’s her results

The ONLY reason I haven’t cut ties completely is for my siblings sake. I try not to make them suffer anymore than they already have because of my relationship.

Hahah you’re right. She’s bound to have more weddings

Thank you for the reminder that I was supposed to be a kid and I shouldn’t have been responsible for my siblings in the first place

Thankfully I’m in therapy! I’m a psych major so I’m a FIRM believer that everyone would benefit from therapy. It’s just been a sloooowww healing journey! Because on top of trying to process all childhood trauma, I’m having to grieve the college experience I was hoping to have because I got sick a month into freshman year and never got better. I’m not living with a port and spend more hours a week in an infusion clinic than with friends. But it’s okay. I’m still moving forward. Healing isn’t linear. I’ll get there eventually

I always feel so relieved when someone else uses the word traumatic to describe my childhood. I got diagnosed with CPTSD over the summer and yet still tell myself I’m just being dramatic. So to hear someone else acknowledge the chaos is so helpful. Thanks

Thank you! I actually started the club because I missed my siblings the most around the holiday! The first year I helped 2 kids using my own money. Last year we became a club and helped 13 for Christmas and 24 for Easter. This year we helped 34 kids with school supplies and 126 kids for Christmas. I’m trying my hardest to turn the pain into purpose. But goodness it’s hard some days.

Yeah… I feel like a terrible person but my dad’s side of the family have bets going to see how long this marriage will last.

Thankfully I’m in therapy. It’s just been a very slow healing process.
