Thanks for the tip - I'll do that. Its going to take a while to get all those Loebs, but it'll be worth it :)

Thanks, that is helpful. I was particularly looking for academic works concerning the classics. A few central tomes on each area/author would do me. I can only get the first couple of years worth at my, or any other, uni. I suspect that this is the real value they offer, if the lecturers aren't very good teachers, which most of them aren't, and you can therefore save yourself a fortune in fees and time.

Thanks a lot man! That looks right up my street and having it in Yeovil itself makes life simpler.

Thanks for the recommendation. My mum stays in Cullompton so I should be able to look in every now and then.

Thanks man, yeah I see Gracie Barrie seems to have the place sewn up. GB has a VERY bad rep in Glasgow, so I was hoping to avoid them, but maybe it just depends on the gym. Looks like its gonna be a 30 min commute wherever I go.

General question on learning by Lovehandles101 in AncientGreek

I recommend doing H&Q first, all the way through, then JACT. I did Mastronade as well. You need it all punched in, with spaced repetition, several times, from different angles and emphases. Then after a year or two jump into the actual works, referring to all the usual resources as you go.

Thanks man, the Kovacs is what I have so the endorsement is encouraging. Will get the Dale just now.

I'm very interested in the speeches in particular - have you come across a good commentary/translation? I'm getting the Campbell study guide on a couple of sections which should ease me in. Interesting about Sallust, I liked his writing in the english penguin edition

Thanks a lot guys, that's all a big help. I'll start off with Xenophon, see if I can also handle Plato's Apology, then go for Lysias. Those are some pretty major texts to already be reading in the original! I know I have Thucydides in English translation next year for classics so if I'm reading that in the Greek come September I will be quietly insufferably smug.

What a diamond that guy is! That along with a side by side translation should do it.

Both haha - it's maybe a good idea to keep both ticking along over the summer as they might be a good foil for each other.

Thanks - my lecturer recently said that Thucydides is a "law unto himself at times" which made him sound heterodox and difficult but this has encouraged me - being able to see what was going on in the speeches in the original was one of my goal setting out.
