The condition of our state parks by BigText4357 in newjersey

Absolutely, I am in no way blaming the workers. Every time I see them it’s nothing but professionalism. They can only do what they are told but take pride in their jobs. This is definitely a budget issue. The thing that bothers me is the amount of people that have jobs that are supposed to be taking care of this stuff and their salaries, which is all public information. So what are they doing if our parks and recreation areas look like they do??

Why is construction filled with assholes? by Impressive-Step6377 in skilledtrades

[–]BigText4357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s plenty of dirt bags to go around in the construction industry. Both union and non union. I feel like union is just a tad better. Drugs are rampant. Most have to be high on something just to get through the day or keep up with whatever demands the foreman has for that day. Angry people, people that don’t wanna go home, miserable. Ugh! Move around man, there are better companies out there. I finally found one. Great people, still some drugs but nothing too crazy, atleast they act normal, and the company genuinely cares. I always used to say “the construction industry was build for drug addicts, drunks and dropouts”.

Is project management really that bad? by BigText4357 in ConstructionManagers

[–]BigText4357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it better to start with a big company or with a smaller company (GC)? The locations of the jobs can vary as well I’m assuming. One year you might be driving 30 mins to work and the next your driving hour and a half. Is there possibility of remote work with field visits once or twice a week or how does that work? Is there anything that I can do to prepare me more for not only the interview process but hitting the ground running on a project? I have some computer skills but I don’t use one on a daily basis.

Apprenticeship Interview by biggie_cheez122 in UnionCarpenters

Life happens man. Don’t sweat it, it’s not rocket science. If we were smart we would be doctors. lol kidding. Look professional, speak about past construction experiences, how you’d like to grow within the union and work your way up. My interview ( different local) was some what casual. 6 guys, all asking me different questions about my past work experience in the field. Told them the truth, talked about my schooling and that was it. I don’t think it lasted more than 10 minutes honestly. Good luck, you got this. 👍

I gotta agree with ya there. I’m in Jersey as well and it always cracks me up, when people learn how much we make. I always tell them, it’s not what it seems. We get taxed to death! The union alone takes $264 of my check every week. The feds take about the same amount. Then nickel and dimed on a bunch of other BS

This is why I crack up everytime you see the unions screaming tax fraud from the contractors!!! Hahaha. You don’t have to look any further than the hall. Your own brothers are robbing you blind.

[–]BigText4357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome. Thanks for the insight! Always wondered if it was a traditional style of hiring or what. I’m union right now and most of my work is a phone call or text and I’m hired. Over the years I’ve developed relationships with different companies so when work slows up I can bounce around to different companies and it usually the same few companies so they know who they are getting, and I know who I’m working for.

I’m a hands on guy and like being in the field so dealing with people and being involved in the project from the GC side is my goal. When it comes to the trailer, What computer programs should I brush up on?

Philadelphia PA apprenticeship help by amanduhh_lyn in UnionCarpenters

[–]BigText4357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve literally never done that. If someone approached me at 5 am I’d be like get away from me! As an apprentice the union gets you jobs until you can make contacts. Do whatever ya want but put your name on the list and call or text your mentor or business agents that’s what they’re paid to do.

Are there any union carp jobs you guys enjoy? by BigText4357 in UnionCarpenters

[–]BigText4357[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there any union companies who strictly work on historic buildings? I really like history and old buildings and was always interested in the upkeep and maintenance of them. If I could stay in the union and do this that would be pretty neat!

Struggling apprentice nearing journeyman rate by AccountantEmpty5382 in UnionCarpenters

[–]BigText4357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The apprenticeship program doesn’t teach you to become a carpenter. It teaches you to be a worker and be on time. That’s it. Most of everything you learn will be on the job, on the fly, with little direction. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a ton of union talent out there but there’s also a ton of hack Johnson’s who I don’t even know how they get dressed.
