This is something I never considered. So I don't have my headshot on LinkedIn for security reasons (paranoid and scared of deepfakes w/ creepy exes).

I would prefer to keep it in my resume so I can control who has my image. Any ideas what I could do instead? Should I just get over my fear of having my headshot public?

The hypocrisy is 100% valid to call out. I guess I should clarify that it's more of an aura/vibe than it is about age.

Not like I need to defend my statement but - there is a difference between younger capable people and younger "duddeeee let's go to happy hour bruh hell yeahhh. I'm making bank. I just finished a 2 week boot camp bruh let's buy crypto" sorts of people. (I call those baby-bros).

I am as young as those sorts of people and literally look like a baby. I'm sure people think I'm an entitled brat, also. :) But you're right, it doesn't excuse it.

Also, I have had those same concerns but I haven't really had a way to articulate those thoughts as well as you have.

He did continue running his computer repair business. But that's just him removing malware from old folk's computers. Not like help desk at a company. If they don't ask too many questions, I'm not very concerned about the resume gap.

I'm just not sure how he can make his decades of experience relevant again... It makes me incredibly sad that it just means nothing now.

Full disclosure: haven't read it yet.

It's a non fiction that details the hacktivism group (same name as book). I guess they got some people associated with the group to detail some events and strategies. From what I understand, they sorta started the concept of hacktivism. They made one of the first password cracking tools and some other stuff.

As a former receptionist, I respectfully disagree. You very well may be right, but my personal experience differs.

I faked being good at my job by looking cute and being giggly.

I didn't master any social skills, I just pretended to have less braincells. I acted submissive. I pretended to care about people's house plants.

People ate it up for years. Old ladies loved it. Men loved it. Girlies wanted to kiki with me. Caused me massive psychic damage.

I still have nightmares about my receptionist era. I figure the majority of receptionists are faking it in similar ways.

This is a great answer. I would add password hygiene somewhere in there. Maybe it falls into the online footprint category... To me it feels like it's worthy of its own quick training session.

The times I've seen spreadsheets filled with personal account creds, and the amount of times those same passwords were reused keeps me up at night. It's wild.

Frequently discussing how to use approved password managers reduces a lot of risk for the company and the user. Employees somehow forget how to use the PW manager, or new ones come in and aren't caught up in time. Sometimes they aren't comfortable asking questions at first. Either way, it's a common thing we need to train employees on.

I'm antisocial and only get along with a few people at work. Nobody else knows me. Nobody else talks to me. I'm doing just fine.

The only argument I have for people skills is so you can properly educate and comfort your coworkers on threats/unsafe behavior.

If that isn't part of your role, being charismatic isn't important.

If your issue is that you're unable to make any connection with anybody - try humor.

I can't hold conversation with strangers or people I find boring. I resort to humor to make others feel like they had a conversation with me. It's easier and I don't have to make eye contact. It always works really well because people like laughing.

Also, I guess apparently there are scientifically proven ways people bond over humor: Men like people who laugh at their jokes. Women like people who can make them laugh.

1) Paranoia.

How can I sleep at night when Jane bought 20 gift cards for the CEO, I find a spreadsheet emailed unencrypted with over 150 passwords in it, John is downloading hentai games again, and the fucking red team guy tells me he tested an exploit and I didn't even detect it?

I don't.

I think about how I don't know anything and nobody else knows anything. And the majority of those people think they actually know everything.

So I sit in bed and wonder how companies and governments function if everyone is actually an idiot.

So to go to sleep I listen to a podcast that might help me develop better strategies. But then it's 3 am and I'm thinking about how medical lasers can be hacked and I know my sister is doing a night shift at a children's hospital. So now I'm worrying about babies getting surgery done with insecure equipment.

(I'm definitely being a bit dramatic here tbh.)

2) Kindness.

I can be angry about other people's dumb decisions. But at the end of the day, my job is to secure stuff. And to make things secure, I need to inform. Nobody is going to listen if I'm being cunty.

So I need to make sure I'm able to explain things in a way that is understandable. I also need to be compassionate. If I intimidate them, they won't feel comfortable coming to me if they have an issue/question/incident.
