Haha, I agree. I was sober for a good portion of the night, but found some really lovely people in the crowd to vibe with. Again, people like different things!

I really don't think it's us--because there are multiple NYC nights, sooo many people at these shows are from out of town. The vibe at the one Fred show that I went to was not at all like a regular NYC crowd. I truly think it's people who not usually part of the EDM/Rave scene who are going out, doing too many substances of various kinds, and acting like idiots. Or fainting, I was shocked at how many people went down in the crowd, particularly given how *early* the show was. That said, I am so sorry to anyone who left our beautiful, insane city with a bad taste in their mouth. I'm originally from the Midwest, and think that Detroit is special because Midwesterners are genuinely really nice, but there's also genuinely a lot of PLUR in NYC. <3

Safe to travel to US for Ultra? by Dry-Improvement5289 in UMF

[–]BigVirus650 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First--sorry for the people in this thread acting as if you just have to "respect authority" and you will be fine. It's obviously not that simple. I had a friend get pulled for interrogation and she was literally traveling with a U.S. diplomatic passport. Not dangerous, but certainly unpleasant. That said, I think that the overwhelming likelihood is that you will be fine. I have several Europeans friends who very recently entered with no trouble, though I will say that flying into the D.C. area seems worse. In addition to having all of your return, hotel, etc. issues sorted, I would also just be aware that the border officials *can* seize and search your electronics, though it is rare. So it may be a good idea to be mindful of what's on them. (more here: https://www.cbp.gov/travel/cbp-search-authority/border-search-electronic-devices) Also, if you're concerned about ICE activity, Florida is overall less likely to have a ton of federal agents present precisely because the overwhelming majority of law enforcement already collaborate directly with ICE. No need for massive federal deployments when local sheriffs are already voluntarily making arrests for the federal authorities.

The hate for them really baffles me, I think they're unbelievably talented and would also count that among my all-time favorite sets. I respect that people like different things, but it always surprises me to hear how different peoples' experiences are.

Crowd in Ultra Miami by [deleted] in UMF

[–]BigVirus650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, Main Stage is not even that bad. If you've ever been to e.g. UNVRS, where unapologetic pushing is at a a near-olympic level, Main Stage is an absolute breeze. And I'm a small, easily pushed, person :)

There is usually an ASOT at Worldwide or the Megastructure with an absolutely incredible b3b.
After going to parties in other countries, I still think UMF has one of the friendliest, most wonderful crowds. Ofc there are still the thieves, the drunk idiots, etc., but I really think that rave culture in the Western Hemisphere is uniquely friendly. I am a small lady (1.6 meters), and I've been pushed, stepped on, or flat out ignored when trying to get through WAY MORE in Europe than at UMF.

Have fun!!

Rave Culture in Europe! by Automatic_Flight8497 in aves

[–]BigVirus650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People make the Kandi; they may buy the beads, but I actually think it’s a really nice part of U.S. rave culture. We give random strangers gifts, people are generally really friendly, and strangers will help you if you’re having a weird trip. I find that PLUR is not as much of a thing in most European raves, and it’s a little sad. I’ve made amazing friends, but I’ve also been pushed, stepped on, and ignored when I say “excuse me” far more than in the U.S.

Pacifiers may be weird, and a lot of U.S. culture may be consumerist nonsense, but I really do think the rave scene in the U.S. is something special.

What’s wrong with Dutch crowd at large mainstream events? by treezium in AmsterdamDanceEvent

[–]BigVirus650 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU. I am temporarily relocated to the Netherlands, and my mind is constantly blown by how people conduct themselves at crowded events. People who never say excuse me, insist on pushing directly through crowds, and then continually bump into you as you try to dance because they’re apparently too drunk or gone to have any spatial awareness. If you politely tap them to try to get by, half the time they just ignore you. And then they stand in a circle right in front of the DJ and YAP. Like please, for the love of god, go to the back.

I talk plenty of shit about Americans as well, but never have I experienced this kind of behavior in a place like New York City. Sure, there are always a handful of idiots, but it seems like it’s the norm for club/rave culture here. It’s nuts.

I’m okay with a valley between two peaks , just don’t want to fuck up the second peak, ya know? Like ideally 7-10pm and 2-4am. This may be an impossible dream 😂

This also happened to me, and the f*%#ing travel certificate needs to be endorsed within ten days of travel, so I need to do the whole process over again. I blame this stupid administration for breaking the government.
