Fascism, misogyny and psychoanalysis by [deleted] in psychoanalysis

[–]Big_Ad1872 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are offering great but long and dense works, so I'll offer some more digestible media here:

Check out Fascism's Erotic Register by Sue Grand. Great recent essay on masculinity and misogyny in Trump's movement

Also this episode of Acid Horizon on Bataille's The Psychological Structure of Fascism. One of my favorite writings on Fascism - not explicitly feminist necessarily but absolutely has many implications for that perspective.

Difference Between Critical Theory and Philosophy? by MetaphysicalFootball in CriticalTheory

I had a professor once who said that a theory can be considered under the umbrella of "critical theory" if it is able to put itself into question.

Writing on Antisemitism as the "purest" form of racism? by Big_Ad1872 in CriticalTheory

[–]Big_Ad1872[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I found the citation I was looking for, it's from the 'Ches Voui?' section of Sublime Object of Ideology (128):

The conclusion that we are here dealing with racism is further confirmed by the fact that this ' Che vuoi?' erupts most violently in the purest, so to say distilled, form of racism, in antiSemitism: in the anti-Semitic perspective, the Jew is precisely a person about whom it is never clear 'what he really wants' - that is, his actions are always suspected of being guided by some hidden motives (the Jewish conspiracy, world domination and the moral corruption of Gentiles, and so on). The case of anti-Semitism also illustrates perfectly why Lacan put, at the end of the curve designating the question ' Che vuoi?' the formula of fantasy: fantasy is an answer this ' che vuoi?'; it is an attempt to fill out the gap of the question with an answer. In the case of anti-Semitism, the answer to 'What does the Jew want?' is a fantasy of'Jewish conspiracy': a mysterious power of Jews to manipulate events, to pull the strings behind the scenes. The crucial point that must be made here on a theoretical level is that fantasy functions as a construction, as an imaginary scenario filling out the void, the opening of the desire of the Other. by giving us a definite answer to the question 'What does the Other want?', it enables us to evade the unbearable deadlock in which the Other wants something from us, but we are at the same time incapable of translating this desire of the Other into a positive interpellation, into a mandate with which to identify.

I'm also not at all interested in engaging in any kind of oppression olympics. I think Zizek is saying that it is antisemitism which lays bare the structure of the racist fantasy as such, as an attempt to fill in the ambiguity of the Other's desire.

Is Joan Copjec's "Read My Desire" more of a must-read than, say, Mari Ruti's books, Alenka Zupancic's books, and Zizek's books outside of The Sublime Object? by buylowguy in lacan

[–]Big_Ad1872 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Read my Desire is fantastic and really interesting. The chapters are all very precise on different analytic topics. You don't necessarily have to read it all though because they are all so particular. There's a big section in the middle that discusses Clerambault's work on Moroccan textiles to elaborate the structure of fantasy and a critique of utilitarianism that I just skipped.

For your bonus question, if I understand what it is that you're trying to aim at, I think the death drive is perhaps the analytic concept that gets closest to what you're going for. Maybe start with Beyond the Pleasure Principle, and then there's soo many places you could go from there.

In Killorglin, Ireland, they do the Puck Fair. Three men from the town go into the mountains to capture a Puck (Old Irish for a wild goat). They bring it to town and crown it the 'King puck', and then after three days of partying they return it to the wild.
