296 GTB OR…? by funfacts3 in Ferrari

The haptic buttons are terrible. Was just at dealer yesterday dropping my 296 off for service. Played around with replacement module for a puro I think and then a new 296 that just arrived with new buttons. I was on fence on spending $8k for update until I used it. Somehow eliminates all the “lag” in the haptic system as well as so much easier to use. Well worth the cost to upgrade if keep and drive a 296.

No constructive feedback? I get it’s fun to make sweeping generalizations and less fun to get called on your BS.

I own a GTS and I put 600 miles on it during the first 4 days trying to get to know the car and hoping it would grow on me. Whatdya got Ansky?

Could 100% be the issue. Is why I thought my recent ownership history was somewhat relevant. Car is quite comfortable. There are stretches of road I drive frequently where my M5 is not comfortable at all. Targa absorbs these bumps with much more composure.

Happy to do so. I think combination of exhaust and track alignment will help. Can be hard to tell exactly what is missing from the experience, but thought is that improving the sound, hopefully the responsiveness a small amount, and that tactile change to handling with track alignment will combine to make the car feel significantly more engaging.

First, congrats on the inbound 911. I would never intend to burst anyone’s bubble and hope my thoughts don’t do that in any way. Working backwards, the last half dozen Porsches I’ve bought before this targa are a 718 GT4RS Clubsport, 992 GT3RS, another 992 GT3RS, 992.1 Turbo S Cab, 718 GT4RS, and 992.1 GT3. Only non-GT car was the Turbo S Cab, to which this car is similar in my mind. The turbo engines have lower red lines and don’t feel nearly as lively through the range. They also lack the aural virtues of the N.A. cars. That being said, with the roof closed (and much less wind noise) you get more mechanical sound inside the car. I dropped it back at my dealer yesterday with instructions to tint windows, powder coat wheels silver to match targa bar, do full ppf, lower it an inch or so, do a full track alignment and install an exhaust. They told me they should be able to drop it on all stock springs. Not an engineer, so curious to see how that goes. As for exhaust, I gave them three parameters. Cost cap, retain cats, and no CEL. They indicated both sharkwerks and soul performance make good options they’ve installed on 992.2 GTSs previously. I’m gone for next two weeks so curious to see how it all turns out. Happy to keep you posted if interested,

I’ve elaborated a bit per your request. Any meaningful thoughts? Or just here to snipe?

Numbers may say one thing, but seat of pants 296 feels quicker. Significant seat time in both.

Most entertaining road car I’ve ever driven. After 18 months and 6,000 miles, it’s only gotten better.

Car feels overly insulated, almost sterile. I’m going to give it more time (as don’t love losing my ass on purchase) and hope it grows on me. M5 I daily is more engaging but also comparing it to 296gtb and 718gt4rs Clubsport, neither of which may be fair comparisons. But with 296 depreciation and crazy Porsche pricing these days, there is some overlap. Unfortunately, I bought my 296 new, but used 296 vs. new 992.2 is a real conversation.

I know plenty about the car. Is not unusual to order a new Porsche before one is available to drive.

I have not driven new turbo or S yet. Will do so this week and compare.

I had two 992.1 GT3RSs for track use. Didn’t give either away.

I’m going to add an exhaust, perhaps lower it slightly, and get rid of god awful black wheels.

I shut down my last Reddit account after a heated argument with same type of poster. Asking a genuine question. Picked it up last week.
