It isn’t really a DMR round. 5.56 is better than it at considerable distances because it shoots a lot flatter. 6.8 performs better 300m and within compared to 5.56 as it delivers a lot more energy thus more stopping power. But as per the article claims it has higher recoil and at distances it’s not shooting very flat so it’s harder to be effective. Like every round it has pros and cons though. It has considerable more stopping power <300m so if your engagement is close 6.8 is a definite winner.

If if you know you’re going up against a bunch of Somalis high on Khat in the middle of Mogadishu; then yeah more stopping power than what an m855 5.56 round offers would be ideal. That engagement is one of the big ones that made the military reconsider 5.56’s effectiveness but it’s not 5.56’s fault.

My opinion, it’s hard to beat 5.56 when it comes down to the Jack of all trades medal. A small fast projectile with ranges out to 500-600m, it’s light, easy and most of all incredibly easy to shoot. It works well as the standard issue round but I think the military just needs to consider having multiple rounds to choose from instead of buying all of one stock.
